Broughton put the lid on another league campaign with a 54-0
win over basement boys Earlston at Wardie.
10 unanswered tries in total including scores for Butcher &
Gladwin who broke their try-scoring duck in a competitive match for the Club.
The day belonged to Broughton die-hard Duncan Nicolson.
A Man of the Match performance, which included a try, was topped off by the Prop
picking up the Player of the Year Award later in the evening.
Head Coach Graham Bonner was quick to praise Duncan, now in
his 11th season in the Club, for his hard work, determination, faultless
training record and unbroken run of 18 league and 5 Cup Games this season which
also reaped 7 tries.
The Players Player of the Season was exceptionally close,
with Sandy Urquhart earning the plaudits and votes from his fellow players.
Sandy made it to the Awards Ceremony after hot-footing it from Meggatland after
playing for Edinburgh Accies 2's in their win over Boroughmuir.
Most Improved Player, always a tough one to call for the
Coach, almost went to Grant Wilson for a second season, however Graham decided
that Darragh Lenihan, the Gaelic Football convert, had come on leaps and bounds
over the year and his 8 tries and 1 conversion certainly showed how he had come
onto a game.

Broughton felled by Forrester
A game of two halves. A cliché used more times in sport
than one cares to imagine, however it describes a game that saw Broughton play
catch up rugby against their National League 2 opposition and nearly cause
another Cup upset at Wardie.
The 29-36 scoreline in favour of Forrester doesn't tell half
the story of a game which saw Broughton turn round at half-time 10-31 down.
An extremely credible performance against higher placed
opposition from a Broughton side who, on another day, would have won after
breaching the oppositions try line on no fewer than six occasions!
Saturday's 39-20 victory over Dick Vet College was the
perfect opportunity for several of Broughton's fringe players to tempt Head
Coach Graham Bonner to pick them ahead of next week's Shield Round 1 fixture
against National League 2 outfit Forrester.
Played in
tremendous spirit, Broughton Captain Johnny Wells and Robert 'Bombhead' Malcolm
turned out for the opposition along with Jamie Lindsay, the Trinity winger who
came along for 'a 10 minute run-out' but landed up playing the full 80 minutes!
The game itself was one for the purists, with both sides trading early blows in
terms of scores. Beaton for the home side who saw his opening try
cancelled out by Dick Vets guest Wells. Lenihan put Broughton back in the
lead before a well worked Vet drive made the score 10-10.
Lenihan put Broughton's noses back in front, followed by a half-pitch sprint by
Harper (coverted by Harper) and an 40 metre interception try by Keenan.
Arrandale notched up a brace of tries with a Dick Vet
breakaway score sandwiched in between and with 10 minutes to go, the score of
39-15 perhaps flattered the hosts.
Perhaps it was fitting that
the visitors completed the scoring with a try in the 73rd minute after Bombhead
broke away before passing inside for his centre to allow the Vets to breach the
Broughton whitewash for the 4th time. Final Score: 39-20 and all
that was left to do was to head for the Clubhouse to watch the 6 Nations Super
Saturday.

Broughton Rugby Club - Code of
Conduct
Following complaints received by the Club over the conduct of
sections of the Broughton touchline during Saturday's game, Club President Mark
Brown would like to issue the following statement:
"It is
always disappointing to receive negative feedback from anyone following their
visit to Broughton Rugby Club.
We as a Club pride ourselves on
offering a pleasurable experience for all who visit our Clubhouse - Men, Women,
Boys and Girls - and enjoy watching the great rugby currently being played at
Wardie.
Unfortunately, there were alleged incidents on
Saturday where the passion of the game over-spilled into unacceptable levels of
foul language being used at times from the home touchline.
I
would like to therefore announce that there will be a Zero Tolerance Code of
Conduct policy in
place until the end of the current season and anyone falling foul of this policy
WILL be asked to move away from the touchline to prevent any recurrence of the
above alleged incidents.
It is always regrettable that any
incidents taint an otherwise fantastic afternoon normally enjoyed at Wardie.
I personally welcome comments from any Club Member or Visitor to the Club to
establish ways of making each and every visit to Wardie an memorable one - for
all the proper reasons.
Yours in Rugby,
Mark A Brown, Club
President"
16/02/08 - Broughton pack a punch but can't
halt GHA
GHA’s 57-12 win at Broughton in front of the SRTV cameras looks comfortable enough, but supporters of both
sides agreed that the home pack had given as good as they got.
The Prem 1 men
went ahead with an early try from Des Ziolo to which Jim Noonan added the goal
points, but back came Broughton, Adam McFarlane barged over for a try and
Dan Arrandale’s conversion levelled it.
The Glasgow men eased to 24-12 by the break, and killed off home hopes with a
quick brace of tries just after the restart. Centre Nick Keenan added
Broughton’s second try, whilst Ziolo and skipper Rory Watson each had two tries,
with one each from Dan Sutherland, Andy Williamson, Jono Wright, Ross McClymont
and Chris McKay.
The defeat sees Broughton 'progress' into Round 1 of the Shield. The draw
will be made early this week and the tie will be played on March 1st. For

10/02/08 - Broughton claim National 2 scalp and welcome the Big Guns of GHA!
Broughton's pack
had the power to defeat their National 2 opponents Linlithgow at Wardie on
Saturday in the Round 3 clash of the Scottish Hydro Electric Cup.
The 24-13 final score sets up a Round 4 fixture against Premiership 1 relegation
candidates Glasgow Hutchesons' Aloysians at Wardie next Saturday as the Road to
Murrayfield continues!

Captain's birthday blues but
Broughton aim for Cup bouncebackability
Saturday's Broughton Man of the Match award to Club Captain Johnny Wells may not
have been the perfect birthday present he was looking for at Ross High, as his
charges were defeated by the Title favourites in Tranent by 05-60.
With the East Lothian side needing a victory to keep the pressure on Hawick
Linden, who went down 03-10 at Penicuik, the home side stormed to an early 4 try
bonus point, breaching the Broughton whitewash 4 times in the opening 25
minutes.
This seemed to stir the visitors and the fought back with determined forward
play with Nicolson, Wells and Urquhart all causing problems before Mohammed slid
over at the back of the driving maul for what was sadly a mere consolation try.
By half-time it was 27-5 and the home side, encouraged from the sidelines by
their man on the mobile at Penicuik, notched up another 5 second half tries to
inflict Broughton's worst league defeat in over 4 seasons.

Lucky 13 as Broughton go try
crazy!
Broughton bounced back from the previous week's disappointment at Dunbar by
producing their best rugby display of the season in this 13 try demolition of
relegation candidates Hawick Harlequins.
Jerry Harper was the star of the show grabbing a personal haul of 5 tries in the
65-05 win, which remarkably saw none of the scores being converted!
The Bring Back Olly Maddocks campaign is currently gathering pace....
The Club would also like to thank The Urquhart Clan who have come along to watch
Sandy and the Team during their visit to the Capital. The enthusiasm and
encouragement offered by them, especially Sandy's mum, should be bottled and
sold worldwide to all parents involved in sport!
It was a big day for the Club Association on Saturday, with all 4 Clubs winning
on the same day this season. Edinburgh Accies showed what they are capable
of by beating last season's Prem 1 champs Currie 16-23 at Malleny Park.
Trinity moved up to 6th in National 3 after a 17-6 win over Helensburgh and BATS
won 18-19 down at Gala YM in the Regional 2 clash.

Dunbar Nick it after Keenan calamity!
On a day that
saw just 10 Club matches take place in Scotland, Broughton travelled to Dunbar
for the first match of 2008.
The underfoot conditions were fairly tough in areas, however, had it not been
for the Schoolkids softening up the pitch beforehand in their Bell Lawrie clash,
the match may well have been in doubt.
Broughton took the lead against the run of play in the 15th minute through Dave
Heelan. The Irishman creating a gap to run through without requiring the
luxury of an overlap on the wing. Matthews was unable to slot the
difficult extras.
A frantic start to the second half decided the outcome of the game with the
Dunbar No.8 and Broughton's Tyson both being sin-binned two minutes after the
restart and worse was to follow for the visitors in what was a candidate for
inclusion in any Sporting Bloopers DVD collection.
Dunbar were penalised for encroaching into an offside position and the resultant
kick drifted wide of the posts. What happened next was unfortunate for
Centre Keenan. The Dubliner took his eye off the ball as it came towards
him in the dead-ball area and he allowed it to drop out of his grasp. The
ball bounced up kindly on the solid surface straight into the hands of a
grateful home player who fell over the line. The conversion was good and
the hosts were as surprised as the visiting sideline to be 7-5 ahead.
From red faces to red cards and the referee sent a Dunbar player off for a punch
on 65 minutes, handing Broughton a lifeline.
By this stage, the game looked in some doubt as the thick freezing fog made
visibility extremely poor with the Healthy Living Centre barely visible from the
half-way line.
Captain Wells looked like he had won it for Broughton in the dying moments as he
crashed over from the back of a maul, however the referee was positioned on the
wrong side of the grounding and deemed the ball to have been held-up.
Frustration then for a Broughton side who deserved more than their loss bonus
point they left with.
Next week it's back to Fortress Wardie where we welcome Hawick Harlequins.
