Dunbar Christmas Whine made with Sour Grapes::::::

Our man in East Lothian muttered disbelief whilst reading the match report in his East Lothian Courier from the recent Broughton v Dunbar fixture at Wardie.

Was the reporter, a Mr S. Grape (pictured left), at Wardie that day?  Did he / she watch the game?  I felt obliged to reply on behalf of the club to the weekly periodical and to their credit, got a reply from the Sub-Editor the same day.

Read the article then the correspondence below and make up your mind!

Dear Sir

I feel compelled to write after reading the match report in the East Lothian Courier (17 Dec) from the Broughton v Dunbar fixture.

Firstly may I ask if indeed the scribe attended said fixture on the day or did they write it on the hearsay of a sour graped Dunbar Committee who did not have the courtesy to take up the invite into the Broughton Committee Room after the game?

As a matter of interest, SRU Chief Executive Phil Anderton expressed his delight at watching a fast flowing game of rugby and highly commended the Broughton No.10 and the stout defending for some 15 minutes in the 2nd half to prevent the Dunbar outfit going over the try line.  Indeed, Anderton opened up his 4 Year Strategy Plan at Murrayfield the next morning with those very words.

As for injuries & work commitments, we can all cite those reasons for a heavy loss and it happens to all teams over the course of the season, but your 'reporters' notes on the lack of a 2nd ball as simply laughable!  If we waited 15 minutes for another ball, we would have been playing in darkness!  I think you will find that another ball had simply been left in the changing rooms and this problem was rectified shortly afterwards with minimum fuss.

Finally, should Broughton have wished to slow the play down, surely that is a fine piece of tactical masterclass and this was merely reflected in the Final Score of Broughton 39 Dunbar 3.  Even this was reported incorrectly!

Yours in rugby
