Dunbar Nick it after Keenan
calamity!
On a day that saw just 10 Club matches take place in Scotland, Broughton
travelled to Dunbar for the first match of 2008.
The underfoot conditions were fairly tough in areas, however, had it not been
for the Schoolkids softening up the pitch beforehand in their Bell Lawrie clash,
the match may well have been in doubt.
Broughton took the lead against the run of play in the 15th minute through Dave
Heelan. The Irishman creating a gap to run through without requiring the
luxury of an overlap on the wing. Matthews was unable to slot the
difficult extras.
A frantic start to the second half decided the outcome of the game with the
Dunbar No.8 and Broughton's Tyson both being sin-binned two minutes after the
restart and worse was to follow for the visitors in what was a candidate for
inclusion in any Sporting Bloopers DVD collection.
Dunbar were penalised for encroaching into an offside position and the resultant
kick drifted wide of the posts. What happened next was unfortunate for
Centre Keenan. The Dubliner took his eye off the ball as it came towards
him in the dead-ball area and he allowed it to drop out of his grasp. The
ball bounced up kindly on the solid surface straight into the hands of a
grateful home player who fell over the line. The conversion was good and
the hosts were as surprised as the visiting sideline to be 7-5 ahead.
From red faces to red cards and the referee sent a Dunbar player off for a punch
on 65 minutes, handing Broughton a lifeline.
By this stage, the game looked in some doubt as the thick freezing fog made
visibility extremely poor with the Healthy Living Centre barely visible from the
half-way line.
Captain Wells looked like he had won it for Broughton in the dying moments as he
crashed over from the back of a maul, however the referee was positioned on the
wrong side of the grounding and deemed the ball to have been held-up.
Frustration then for a Broughton side who deserved more than their loss bonus
point they left with.
Next week it's back to Fortress Wardie where we welcome Hawick Harlequins.

Murray's mint performance has
Christmas bonus all wrapped up!
Broughton ended 2007 on a high with a bonus point victory over Leith at Wardie,
with Murray Smith, a product of the BATS Development scheme, earning the
plaudits of his team-mates to win the Man of the Match award.
It was a Christmas cracker of a try from Duncan Nicolson that will keep the
Broughton faithful talking over the extended winter break! The big prop
ran in a full 25 yards, despite the best attentions of four Leith players, to
score a memorable try. Possibly more memorable due to the fact that it was
up the slope....
Further tries by Urquhart, Wells, Lenihan and a couple of Matthews conversions
gave Broughton a 24-13 victory, a scoreline that really doesn't reflect the gulf
in class shown between the two sides on the day, even with Broughton fielding a
severely depleted side.
Our very own
John Darwin - Donald Pyper - has apparently
disappeared without trace again and failed to show for Saturday's game.
One can only hope that he will decide to hand himself into the Coach soon!
Also unavailable was Vice-Captain Adam McFarlane due to an apparent severe case
of Quadriceps contusion (a wee sair leg for the medically untrained!) and worst
of all was Nick Keenan who was sending his girlfriend off to Basra for 4 months.
Harsh at this time of the year Nick and some lengths to go to in order to save
money on presents, but potentially fair?!
Full match report can be found here.

Brrrroughton freeze out North
Berwick -
Broughton
notched up their 6th league victory in a row over North Berwick in conditions
that could only be described as a typically Scottish winter's day.
Freezing cold and driving rain looked as if it would cancel out any hope of a
decent game however, Broughton produced some of their best rugby of the season
to win 10-0.
The victory came at a cost however, with Johnny Beaton - perhaps Scotland's most
unluckiest player this season - spending 4 hours in the Edinburgh Royal
Infirmary on Saturday night after sustaining a fractured cheekbone in a first
half collision with a stray knee. Thankfully he had time to complete his
Player Profile beforehand!
A brief match report, as it was quite frankly too cold to write, can be found
here

Hawick balls leave sour taste in
mouth -
Broughton effectively blew any slim hopes of winning the title as they lost
15-37 at a windy and cold Volunteer Park against Hawick Linden.
No-one expected anything other than a tough battle against the League Leaders
and it didn't take long for the hosts to stamp their authority on the game.
For the full horror story, click here
With all the other teams above us winning and next week's opponents North
Berwick leapfrogging us after their 17-3 victory against Leith, Broughton slip
to 5th for the first time this season.
25/11/07 -
Seaside stroll as title race heats up -
Broughton put their Championship hopes back on track with a 5 try demolition of
Portobello at Cavalry Park.
The weather was not akin to that you expect by the seaside and a strong
crossfield wind combined with intermittent rain made attractive rugby tricky.
However, a 4 try feast in the final 10 minutes of the first half put the game
out of the hosts reach and with Hawick Linden losing out to North Berwick, the
title run in is going to be extremely close. Read the match report here

That's the way the 'Cuiky
crumbles...

The 'Cuiky Monsters really did take the biscuit on Saturday as Broughton
suffered their biggest league defeat since March 2006.
The 0-32 scoreline perhaps suggests more of a one-sided affair than it actually
was and perhaps if lady luck had have been on the Broughton side, the final
result may have been slightly different.
There were some crumbs of comfort (how many puns?!) in the performances of
Captain Johnny Wells and Robin Snape but with injuries to Dave Heelan & Johnny
Beaton early in the first half, it was always going to be a hard slog
Predictable Penicuik weather meant the game was played in a sweeping gale and
thankfully the rain held off from making it a tropical storm.
However, it was a second half tidal wave of tries for the home side that now
sees Broughton sit 4th in the table with 8 matches to go in the campaign.
Our hopes of the title may have been almost literally blown away at the weekend,
but with a potential 40 points to play for, we are still very much in with a
shout.
Broughton are back on the road next week, this time visiting Portobello
and their new Clubhouse. Your support is vital. Have a day at the
Seaside and pop along to Cavalry Park for the 2pm kick-off.

Broughton still in contention at
halfway point
The Broughton Annual Dinner proved to be a resounding hit at Wardie on Saturday
night with a full house enjoying a fantastic meal and a selection of speakers,
including East Regional Rep Barry Sinclair.
The audience were on their feet in recognition of Chris O'Neill when Head Coach
Graham Bonner presented 'Demon' with an engraved Quaich to commemorate services
to the Club over the past 13 years by one of the toughest players to have ever
put on a Broughton jersey.
Such was the success of the evening, plans are being put in place for the End of
Season Player of the Year Awards dinner to be held in the Clubhouse next April /
May.
On the pitch, Broughton survived an early scare, going behind to basement Club
Earlston in the S.H.E. League fixture. However, 10 unanswered tries, 8 of
which came in the second half, saw Broughton romp home 56-3 winners. Jerry
Harper scored his first tries for the Club, ending up with a hat-trick of
scores. Lenihan and Beaton notched up a brace each and there were single
scores for Tyson, Nicolson and Wells. Conversions were kicked by Arrandale,
Matthews & Lenihan with one a piece.
League Leaders Hawick Linden slipped up on the road to Portobello, with the
Seasiders marking the opening of their new Clubhouse with a 29-18 win.
Next week's opponents Penicuik kept up the pace with 19-6 win at home against
North Berwick and at the end of the first half of the season, there are
potentially 4 sides who could win the title and this campaign will go to the
wire.

Visitors hit the High notes as
Broughton play out of tune. -
There was a special guest at Wardie on Saturday when ex-Captain Jake Harris made
the short trip from his Trinity Lodge Nursing Home residence for the fixture against Ross
High.
Harris, who Captained the Club back in 1948, enjoyed the atmosphere and the
opportunity to meet with some of his old playing chums including George McKinnes,
who at 79, is 4 years younger than Jake!
Despite now being blind, Jake enjoyed the match through commentary from Club
President Mark Brown and Trinity Lodge's Hugh Munro.
In the Clubhouse afterwards, Harris, who played Centre for the Club who were
also a strong 7's side at the time winning the Haddington tournament in his year
of Captaincy, presented the Broughton Man of the Match
award somewhat ironically to current Club Captain Johnny Wells.
On the pitch, a strong Ross High side took advantage of some generous Broughton
defending early on to take a 0-10 lead which Broughton never recovered from.
Despite a 36th minute Urqhuart try - converted by Matthews, Broughton failed to
really get into the game and went down 07-22 which puts a dent into their Title
campaign. Full match report here

It's Linlithgow in the Cup!
 Broughton have today drawn
National League Division 2 Side, Linlithgow, in Round 3 of the S.H.E.
Sponsored Cup.
One player in particular will
be enthused by the draw. Prop and Broughton stalwart Duncan Nicolson spent
several years at the West Lothian outfit before joining the Wardie outfit 12
years ago.
The tie will be played at
Wardie on Saturday February 2nd.

The format of the Scottish Hydro
Electric Cup has changed this season, clubs having opted for a more
regionalized start to the competition at the SRU agm in June.
This season’s format sees Regional League clubs contest Rounds 1 and 2, with
the National League clubs entering the fray at Round 3. Losers from Round 3 go
into the Bowl competition. The Cup goes ‘National’ at Round 4 when the
Premiership clubs join the competition and all qualifiers from Round 3 are
rewarded with a home tie against Premiership opposition. Round 4 losers are
destined for the Shield competition.

Captain Canuck gives Earlston the chop!
-
Broughton travelled to Earlston for their Round 2 Cup Tie knowing that a win
would put them in the hat alongside the National Division sides, albeit on a
Regional basis, including Associated Club Trinity Accies.
Earlston, currently sitting bottom of our Division, fought hard in the opening
half, but with a collection of scenes that wouldn't have looked out of place at
the Alamo in the second half, the injury hit hosts run out of steam and players
as Broughton ran in 4 second half tries to win 31-03.
Man of the Match was Colin Jarvis. Colin is also a Kickboxer and the
Canadian-born
Number 8 notched up a brace of tries to deliver the perfect knock-out blow.

We'll be singing, when were
Quinning! - A 5-try 5 star second half
performance by a injury-ravaged Broughton side saw them collect a bonus point in
a 3-38 win away to Hawick Harlequins. With Head Coach Graham Bonner on
the bench, the message was clear - If you were starting, you were finishing!
And finish with a flourish they did.
However, it wasn't all plain sailing and as the teams turned around at half time
like a triangular sandwich - 3 points a piece, no-one could have predicted the
try-fest and entertaining back play from a Broughton side that produced some of
it's best rugby this season.
Normal service has been resumed this week and you can read The President's journalistically devoid match report here

Comeback Kids Dump Dunbar
-
Broughton staged a dramatic comeback to take the points against Dunbar at
Fortress Wardie in a pulsating 23-19 win.
Due to reporting restrictions (your usual scribe was in Manchester) there is no
official match report this week, however, here are Head Coach Graham Bonner's
comments from the sidelines:
"Broughton won the toss and elected to play up the Wardie slope in the first
half. Dunbar were intent on moving the ball at all opportunities, which they
did to good effect. The Broughton defence was often stretched in the first
quarter but held out limiting Dunbar to three penalties.
Broughton struck back with some excellent interplay between forwards and backs
on a number of occasions resulting in an unconverted try for flying Frenchman
Fragne. With better communication and decision making it would have been
another two tries up the left hand side of the pitch. Dunbar scored a try
towards the end of the first half. Their stand-off put in a cross field kick, a
tactic much used by him and this time it bore fruit. The conversion was
missed. 14 to 5 in Dunbar's favour at halftime.
Broughton kicked off the second half in determined mood summed up by much
improved defence and in particular the excellent tackling of stand off and man
of the match Maddocks. Dunbar found it difficult to get out of their own half
and the pressure told with a penalty and drop goal from Maddocks and tries from
the flying Irish men: Lenihan and the impressive Heelan making his debut: only
one being converted. Dunbar did eventually break the defensive and scored a try
in the last minute of the game to make the final score 23 : 19 in Broughton's
favour."

Chris cross as O'Neill bows out due to injury
Broughton go into the hat for the 2nd Round draw of the SHE Cup after a second
half recovery saw them finish off plucky Inverleith 31-13 on Saturday.
Head Coach Graeme Bonner didn't have his troubles to seek in the warm-up when he
lost Johnny Beaton with a hamstring pull and Chris O'Neill. 'Demon' popped his shoulder in an
accidental brush with 'Comeback Kid' Lloyd Baxter and despite attempts to put it back in as he
has done many times already this season, it just kept on popping back out!
After a trip to the hospital, Chris made it back home on Saturday evening and
announced his retirement from playing to the Club President on Sunday afternoon.
Tries by Malcolm, Fragne and Matthews killed off the East League 2 leaders who
were winning 13-11 at half-time.
A full match report can be found here
30/09/07 -
Johnny has the Beaton of Leith -
Tries by Nick Keenan and Johnny Beaton gave Broughton the
edge over a predictably stuffy Leith outfit at Academy Park on Saturday.
The 15-10 (with the webmaster finding the final piece of the report in the
laundry basket today!) scoreline suggests a tight game, but in reality, a mixture of poor
defence, opposition falling down like skittles at almost every opportunity and
the match being seemingly refereed by the Leith No8 Aitchison, prevented the
match having any chance to flow. A full match can be found
here
26/09/07 - Away Day on Road to Murrayfield
Broughton have been drawn away to Earlston in Round 2 of the Scottish
Hydro Electric National Cup. The Clubs will play each other at The
Haugh twice in three weeks as Broughton venture back to the Borders on League
duty on the 10th November.
East Region – Second Round

Ross High v Gala YM
Meggetland v North Berwick

The Cup Competition is Regionalised like previous years up to Round 4 when the
'Big Boys' from the Premiership come into the equation.
The winners of Round 2 go into the hat alongside the 56 Clubs from the National
Leagues, the losers go into the Bowl Competition and will compete against each
other on a straight knock-out basis.
Losers from Round 3 go into the Shield Competition and will compete against each
other on a straight knock-out basis.
So, there you go. All cleared up then about who plays where. I

North Berwick fall on the wrong side of the Law and pay the penalty!
Broughton staged the late, late show on Saturday as North
Berwick snatched defeat from the jaws of victory by gifting Broughton the win by
a last minute lack of discipline. The 16-15 win at a windy as ever North Berwick in the shadow
of the North Berwick Law, appeared unlikely as the game drifted into deep injury
time.
However, as Broughton Full-Back and Birthday Boy Jerry Harper
hoofed a giant kick from his 22 to set up a final assault on the North Berwick
defence, he was crudely taken out late and the match official awarded Broughton
a penalty where the ball landed.
This was within kicking distance of Man of the Match Olly
Maddocks and the Welsh Stand-Off slotted the ball over the bar to complete the
Broughton comeback.

Broughton suffer crash at Border crossing!
Hawick Linden pulled off a highly controversial smash and grab at Wardie on
Saturday in a tight game that was won 13-14 by the visitors. The South African referee, perhaps still reminiscing over his home Country's
World Cup walkover against England the previous evening, missed a blatant piece of
crossing by the Linden backline in the 66th minute which resulted in the killer
try to send the tourists back home to the Borders with the only 100% record in
the League.
Broughton's points came from tries by Wolniak, the Pole making his league debut &
McFarlane with an early penalty by Maddocks starting the scoring. Read the
full match report
here
The result need not send a panic through the Wardie Clubhouse however.
Despite moving down a spot to 4th, we are still only 4 points behind Linden and
one point behind Dunbar and Penicuik. With the early results indicating
one hell of a tight campaign ahead, points will be dropped all over the place
this season by all teams. So far we have 5 teams who have Won 2, Lost 1!
09/09/07 -
Arnold's Diff'rent Strokes make it 2 from 2!

Broughton made
it 2 out of 2 with what can only be described as an unconvincing 28-10 win over
Portobello at Wardie on Saturday.
Paul Arnold stood in for virus sufferer Olly Maddocks and it was Arnold who
stole the show, scoring 18 of the points on a day where Broughton should have
maximised the bonus point which would have put them joint top.
Your webmaster, in trying to find a comical picture for today's headline got in
a fair amount of trouble typing in 'Different Strokes' into his work computer
and he would strongly recommend that you do not do the same!
Full match report can be read
here
Other matches in East League 1:
Earlston 13-30 Hawick Harlequins, Hawick Linden 17-3 North Berwick, Penicuik
20-16 Dunbar. The biggest surprise of the day came at Ross High where
Leith could only raise a team of 11 therefore Leith will incur the wrath
of the SRU beaks and the match will have to be replayed.
Ex-Broughtonian invests in Scottish Rugby
Former
Broughton High School pupil Sir David Murray swapped the round ball for the oval
version for
the day today (Monday 3rd Sept) when he announced that his iconic Murray
International company will adorn the Scotland Rugby shirts after the forthcoming
World Cup, which kicks off this weekend.
Murray's Ł2.7m investment in the game is welcome news
for the SRU who
have been making headlines for all the wrong reasons in recent months.
Sir David, Glasgow Rangers FC's Honorary Chairman,
who has been a guest at the
Club for our Pre-International Lunches in the past, also called on the
Government and private enterprise to invest in sport in Scotland.

Ole for Olly as Broughton get off to a flyer -
Olly Maddocks kicked 3 penalties as Broughton shook off their nemises Penicuik
in a game that could only be described as one for the purists!
The 9-5 scoreline tells it's own story in a game which saw neither team take
overall control in blustery conditions at Wardie. The President's full match report is available to read
here.
Afterwards, the Players, President and Head Coach made their way to Clark's Bar
to sample some fine ales and, jings, it's coming back to me now, tequila!
Following on from the Mexican theme, it was then up to another favourite haunt,
Garibaldi's but the rest, as they say, is history!

President has to miss Moffat as he was eating his
Turks away!
- With Club President Mark Brown jetting off after the Battle
of the BATS success to the sunnier climes of Turkey, Club Captain Johnny Wells
brings you the low-down from Saturday's victory against West Regional League 1
outfit Moffat Rams. It is just a pity that Brown was back in time to right
the appalling headline!
After the
success in the BATS tournament the previous week it was all change in the backs
line for the Broughton team this week, due to many players being away and which
lead to the inclusion of head coach Graham Bonner at full back. The side were
facing a team from Moffat, that according to their website was decimated by call
offs, holiday and work commitments and arrived with minimum number of players.

Performance
Broughton won
the Annual King of The BATS tournament with 3 wins out of 3 against their
Associated Clubs at Wardie on Saturday.
The Tournament, played in constant rain, was another useful exercise for all the
players and their respective Coaching teams.
Vice Captain Adam McFarlane was Broughton's top try scorer, claiming a try in
each of the games.
Also on the scoreline was Polish hooker Piotr Wolniak who was down for the
Polish Event, held earlier in the day. Piotr (Peter), who played

a welcome addition to the squad.

Broughton come close at Accies Touch Tourney
Broughton lost out on early season silverwear by
the odd score in 7 at Edinburgh Academy Sports Grounds on Saturday in the Final
of the Edinburgh Accies 150th Year Touch Tournament.
After finishing top of the Group stages,
defeating Student Heaven 1-0 and Trinity Accies 'B' 4-2, a Quarter Final against
Accies 4's went to a Golden Point sudden death decider and a similar winning
strategy against Student Heaven again, Broughton met the Hosts, Edinburgh Accies
1's in the Final.
Played in gorgeous Edinburgh Sunshine and in good
spirit, it was the rubber-bodied David Rattray who's flexible anatomy managed to
move out of the way of Broughton fingertips when it appeared impossible to score
the winning try to see the Accies win the game 4-3.
A great day out and special thanks to all who
played for Broughton on the day. Special mention for Duncan who's run in
from 20 (?) yards to score was surely the Try of the Tournament.

The Climb
Sunshine Mountain Tour to Leuven
Brand New Tour
Photos Added
here

All 20 Broughton tourists have (just) returned home safely from their trip to
the home of Stella Artois, the scenic town of Leuven.
The trip, which began early on
Friday morning, was a tremendous success and the name of Broughton Rugby will be
remembered throughout Leuven & Brussels for some time!
Before we departed from
'Glasgow' Prestwick, we had a photo opportunity with one half of the 2006
X-Factor 'stars' The McDonald Brothers! Imagine the horror when he found
out that we were on the same flight as him and choruses of 'Shangalang' rippled
through the airport bar.
Saturday saw us hit
Brussels and Sunday was the
Leuven 7's. More pictures from the 7's Tournament can be found
here.

Brown returns as President at AGM
The 83rd Broughton Rugby Club AGM was held in the
Clubhouse on Thursday 25th May.
Mark Brown was re-elected as
Club President, with Club stalwart Martin Scott becoming Vice-President.
He replaces Andrew Turtle who will remain as Honorary Treasurer. Stan
Smith will be taking over as Honorary Secretary to allow Mark Brown to
concentrate on Presidential duties for the forthcoming season and Stan will be
combining this role with the Subscription Secretary post he held last term.
As a token of appreciation for
his lifelong service to the Club and continued support at the majority of 1st XV
fixtures, George Simpson (who was part of the Broughton side who stuffed
Boroughmuir back in the 1960's!) was nominated and seconded to become an
Honorary President of the Club. Congratulations George.
06/05/07 - S1/S2 BATS Awards
-
Sunday 6th May saw the final Awards ceremony of the year at Wardie. This time it was the
turn of the BATS S1/S2's who play and train out of Broughton.
It was a
double celebration in the Skehel household as Harry followed his younger brother
Alfie's P3/4 Player of the Year Award two weeks ago by picking up the S1
Player's Player trophy.
The S1/S2's
are coached by Broughton members Martin Scott and Andy Turtle and it was Martin
who had the honour of handing out the following Awards:
S1
Player's
Player of the Year - Harry Skehel
Most Improved Player of the Year - Nick Wilson
Player of the Year - Max Love
S2 Player's
Player of the Year - David Forbes
Most Improved Player of the Year - Adam Hall
Player of the Year - Ian Dawson
Many thanks to
all the parents and supporters for putting on a delightful spread for the kids
and for their continued support throughout the season. Without you, we
would not have the successful BATS product.
05/05/07 - Tigers
on the prowl at Murrayfield -
7 of Broughton
Rugby's Junior Section, The Broughton Tigers, took the field at the recent National Cup Final as Mascot's for Associated Club Edinburgh Accies. In
what was a delightful touch, all three Clubs who form the BATS Rugby Foundation,
Broughton, Trinity and of course Edinburgh Accies, were offered the chance to be
represented.
Accies, who in
their 150th Year, gained Promotion to Premiership 1 this season, lost out to
Glasgow Hawks 13-24.

04/05/07 - The Broughton
Tigers Player
of the Year awards for 2006 - 07

The winners, as voted by the players are ;-
P6/5 Hannah Kurtz
P4/3 Alfie Skehel (a record winner three times in a row)
There was close competition from a number of players in an impressive season,
however Hannah and Alfie have been simply outstanding and fully deserved their
awards.
Hannah shows tremendous
potential to go on and progress within the ladies game and who knows, Broughton
may have a Ladies team in the future for her to lead.
Alfie and his brother Jack, who
has become somewhat of a legend in his own packed lunch hour at Broughton, are
tipped for a fantastic rugby career. Remember where you heard the name
Skehel first....
01/05/07 -
Broughton to take the field on Cup Final Day!

Associated Club Edinburgh Accies will take the
field in Saturday's National Cup Final with Broughton well represented!
7 Broughton Minis will join fellow Associated Club
Trinity Accies in supplying Mascots for the Accies squad as they walk onto the
hallowed turf just before 4pm on Saturday as they take on Glasgow Hawks.
In the Accies squad is Ruairidh Bonner, son of
Broughton Head Coach Graham. Ruairidh, a product of the Broughton Minis
section, has had a fantastic year. Capped in the recent IRB U/19 World
Championships in Belfast, Bonner has featured heavily in both Edinburgh Accies
and Trinity's league campaigns. Well done Ruairidh.
You can still purchase tickets for the Final. 'Pick Up and Pay' at Wardie on
Saturday during the visit of Wells Rugby. Ticket prices are Ł10 for Adults
and Ł5 for Juniors, Students and Over 60's.Broughton Rugby will benefit to the tune
of 1/3 of all ticket sales that we make.
This is a great chance to build good support for
Edinburgh Accies against and to make a significant amount of money for our Club.
The Accies team for Saturday's Scottish Cup Final
will be:- Ross Browne; John-Michael Howison, Paul Lowdon, Luke McCann, David
Rattray; Gavin Douglas, Mike Campbell; Peter Burns, Joe Edwards, Alistair Marsh;
Edward Stuart, Nathan Pike; Dan Teague (Capt), Jamie Parker, Greg Campbell.
Replacements:- Ed Stott, Duncan McLeod, Lewis Niven, Stuart Paterson, Ruairidh
Bonner, Stewart Walker, Chris Kinloch
29/04/07 - Biggar
is better at Northern 7's
After disposing of Shropshire
tourists Oswestry and Rugby League outfit Edinburgh Eagles in the Group stages
without conceding a single point, Broughton were in danger of stepping
into uncharted territory as they went into the Quarter Finals of the main
competition, The Blyth & Blyth Northern Cup.
Before taking on Premiership 2 outfit Biggar, the
Broughton team made the pilgrimage down the hill to wall at Raeburn Place to
take in the first half of the Cup Semi-Final between Associated Club Edinburgh
Accies and Broughton conquerors Boroughmuir. With the score at 23-0 in
Accies favour at the break, the Broughton side had to trapes begrudgingly back
to play their 7's Quarter-Final!
Biggar, who had earlier inflicted a heavy defeat
upon Trinity in their Group match, were too hot to handle for the Broughton 7
who were down to 9 in their squad following Rhys Williams having misunderstood
the coach's instructions after the group stages to put on something extra to
keep warm for the hour long wait before playing again. The Kiwi duly got
changed and rejoined his team mates fully clothed with a burger in hand to cheer
them on!
So, after the interruption of
this 7's interlude, it was back down to watch Accies polish off Boroughmuir
38-14 to book their place in the Cup Final at Murrayfield on May 5th.
Next week we will be playing in the Penicuik 7's.
No information on the draw is available at the moment but we will bring it to
you as soon as we get it.
22/04/07 - Young Adam comes
of age!
Adam McFarlane won the coveted Player of the Year Award at
last Saturday night's bash at the Club. Adam, who at a tender age of only
21, has performed consistently well for the Club this year. His continued
improvement has seen him make appearances for our Associated Clubs this season.
Adam has played a few games for Trinity Accies but more
significantly he has been given the chance to show Ian Barnes his potential,
making his Edinburgh Accies debut this season. With Accies playing
in Premiership 1, the future is bright for Young Adam who will also become Vice-Captain
for the 07/08 Campaign. Johnny Wells has agreed to continue on as Captain
and this was unanimously voted for on the night.
Head Coach Graham Bonner, who had hot-footed it from Belfast where he had been
watching his eldest son Ruairidh play for Scotland U/19 in the IRB World
Championships to present the Awards, told the collective audience of Players and
WAGS that it had been a difficult decision with so many players putting in a
tremendous amount of effort this year.
The Coaching Team had another
nightmare decision in choosing the Most Improved Player Award. Robert
Malcolm was highly commended for his marked improvement and many starts for the
Senior XV reflected this. However, the Award went to Grant Wilson.
Grant, who originally played in the back row, stepped up to the front row this
season and has played consistently well in all three front row spots this year.
Despite his Hooking inexperience, Grant has put in a first class effort to work
on this incredibly demanding and highly technical position and this has been
recognised by the Coaching Team.
The Player's Player of the Year was slightly more
clear cut. His dominance from the No8 position and his ability to continue
to stay upright with players hanging off his arms and legs and still offload the
ball was more than enough for his team mates to give Sandy Urquhart their vote.
The Event was a tremendous success with a vast
array of food on offer, contributed by many of the players (although I suspect
that there was many a good lady behind the majority of it!). The President's
Pallet was extensively stimulated by Holly's Banoffee Pie! Yummy!
Stan's the Man!
Congratulations are in order to
Broughton Stalwart and gentle giant Sean 'Stan' Smith and his wife Sarah who
have announced that they will be expecting their first child in October this
year.
Rumours that a sweep will be
held to guess the baby's height instead of the traditional weight have been
circulating around the Club since the announcement. With Stan towering in
at 6' 8", it's time to start knitting the legs and arms for your offerings of
baby garments now as you may have them finished in time!
Finally, if you can ensure
therefore that your Subscriptions are all paid on time for next season by the
end of September, this will help free up more time for Stan to concentrate on
nappy days!!
21/04/07 - Edinburgh Accies win
the 2007 Bibby Factors Scotland Broughton Rugby 7's

An unexplained no-show from Ross High meant that
there would be a new name on the Cup this year and Edinburgh Accies made the
short trip back to Raeburn Place with the Bibby Factors Scotland sponsored Cup
defeating Portobello in the Final 48-0. It was tough luck on Portobello who have
finished as runners-up on consecutive occasions in the main Cup competition.
Will it be third time lucky next season? In the Plate Final, North Berwick
beat Inverleith.
Broughton went out of the Cup Competition at the
Semi-Final stage, losing out to Portobello 19-26.
24/03/07 - All's Well That Ends Wells
- Broughton finished the season
on a high with a hard fought 15-26 win away to North Berwick. With Hawick
Linden only managing to beat Leith 21-8 and not securing a bonus point, the
victory ensured a respectable 3rd place finish for the Wardie men.
It was perhaps fitting that Club Captain Johnny
Wells scored the final try of the season with 10 minutes to go. Man of the
Match Sandy Urquhart put in another superlative display and a special mention to
the wee Welshman Olly Maddocks who's 2 conversions and 4 penalties helped him to
break through the 100 point barrier for the season.
The final league match report of the season can be
found here...
17/03/07 - Northern monkey
off our backs in late late show - Broughton left it late to win
the penultimate game of the 2006/07 season against basement boys Edinburgh
Northern at Inverleith Park on Saturday.
The 32-6 scoreline suggests a slightly more
comfortable victory than it seems, with 3 of the Broughton tries coming in the
late stages of the second half.
The victory, earning Broughton a 4-try bonus
point, sees the Wardie outfit leapfrog Hawick Linden to take 3rd place with one
game of the campaign to go.
Saturday's match report isn't it's usual in-depth
quality due to your reporter not docking in Rosyth from his 2nd Wedding
Anniversary trip to Bruges until 11.40am - approximately half-way through the
game! Lateness apparently was the order of the day with second row giant
Stan Smith turning up some 30 minutes before kick-off after being delayed due to
the Botanic Gardens not being open until 10am to allow him the opportunity of a
shortcut to the Park! The
late show was brought to you by way of tries for Nicolson (2), Arrandale and Man
of the Match Wells with one each. Maddocks found his kicking shoes with 3
conversions and 2 penalties.
03/03/07 - Broughton flushed with
success as Dunny cleaned out
A Hat-Trick from Adam McFarlane, affectionately
nicknamed 'Hooch' off the field, helped Broughton sign off their Home campaign
in style with an impressive 35-0 demolition of Dunbar.
The 21 year old back-rower, who
made his Edinburgh Accies 1st XV debut two weeks ago, was in great form and even
managed to get in the regulatory hat-trick jugs after the game!! McFarlane
has been something of a nemesis for the East Lothian side, having scored 5 out
of his 9 tries this season against them! The Match Report can be read
here.
The victory was also a fitting result as the
curtain came down on the career of Broughton stalwart Paul Maddison.
Maddison and his partner Claire head out to Wellington on Thursday to set up a
new life together in the 'Land of the Long White Cloud'.

Also on the move is former
Broughton player Angus Dacker who is leaving The Netherlands to start work in
the Cayman Islands. Life is tough for some....
Finally, on the way back -
albeit just for a visit, is Rob Shaw. Rob featured in the starting line up
on the wing at the start of this season before moving to Australia. The
good news is that he won't be back until Christmas so you have plenty of time to
get your excuses ready.....
Good news on the recovery
front as one of our long term crocks Donald Pyper reports that his operation
went well and he now has a new knee and shiny crutches!
The nice nurses gave the recuperating hooker
some very good pills so it took him a while to feel any post-op pain.
Donald is likely to be out of action for some 12
months in total so we should see him back in time for the start of the 2008/09
season.
At least it'll give him time to save up for an
alarm clock....
17/02/07- Linden need 16 to beat bewildered Broughton
-
Broughton travelled to Hawick to take on Linden
knowing that a 4 try win would see them leap-frog their hosts.
Unfortunately the home side held onto a 27-22 lead to take the points at a
sunny Volunteer Park.
The major talking point of the afternoon was the
general apathy and poor officiating from the Referee. Time after time
Broughton appeared to be penalised when they seemed to be on the ascendancy
and the local referee appeared content to ensure that the points stayed in his
home town with several contentious interpretations of the Laws. The
biggest call of the day came in the last play when Broughton drove up to
within inches of the Linden line and the Ref was the only man in Hawick to
spot a knock on when in fact it so blatantly came off a Broughton leg.
The leg in question being that of Donald Pyper, who goes under the knife later
this week to get knee ligament damage corrected which will put him out of
action for 9-12 months.
This may of course sound like sour grapes but
the gripes would have been the same should we have grabbed the late win.
A Full Report can be found here
03/02/07 - Broughton are Irvinated!
-
Broughton bowed out of the Shield Competition after a makeshift squad lost out
15-71 to National 1 Leaders Irvine.
The team had an unfamiliar look about it with
only 15 players available / able / willing to travel for this match which the
SRU decreed perfectly sensible to play on the opening day of the 6 Nations! It might have been the bare 15 if we hadn't managed to get a
hold of Hooker Donald Pyper after 7 attempts on the phone to wake him up!
Head Coach Graham
Bonner dusted down his boots to take the only place on the bench and it was
just as well when Chris O'Neill damaged his leg with 10 minutes to go and had
to retire.
Bonner, who's eldest Son Ruairidh was recently
selected for the Scotland U/19 Training Squad, was obviously keen to stay
clean and in one piece when he administered a Marcus Di Rollo special - 'The
Turnstyle Tackle' - as their winger raced towards him for the last try of the
afternoon.
I'm sure he will regain his touch for the visit
of Vintage Old Boys who play us in the morning kick-off ahead of the Italian 6
Nations fixture on 24th February. Any over 35's who wish a game, please
get in touch.
The aforementioned Pyper made an early impression, if only in the
eyes of the referee and he was given a rest after 15 minutes for some jiggery-pokery
in the ruck. Why it took the official, who was on an exchange from
Durham, until the 73 minute to sin-bin an Irvine player is beyond the realms
of belief. Penalty after penalty and a couple of 'warnings' were dished
out whereas poor old Pyper was despatched after only a couple of
infringements.
Due to an administrative blunder (I've left my
notes in my kitbag after dropping it off at the Club on Saturday night!) there
will / may be a belated Match Report but I can't really find too much to write
about from the game. Potentially the highlight of the game was the
half-way line interception try from Paul Maddison on the stroke of half-time.
28/01/07 - Big Hearts help Rugby Charity at Quiz
Night
There was a raffle held
at the Quiz Night on the 27th January for a
Hearts & Balls rugby jersey donated by
the match official John Evans, who is a
Director of the Rugby Charity. Broughton player Stan Smith won the
prize but kindly donated the jersey back to the Club so we can auction it off
at another Club event. The raffle raised a fantastic Ł94.60.
A big thank you to all who bought a ticket. Who knows, perhaps we can
see how long we can auction it for whilst raising money for a charity who
contribute to the wellbeing of those who have suffered as a result of serious
injury on the rugby field. Broughton fully supports the Hearts & Balls
cause. Hearts and Balls offer help and support to the likes of former Broughton Players and Honorary Life Members Dugald
McArthur & David Mercer who's rugby careers were sadly cut short due to injury.
27/01/07 - Pannell beater knocks Dalkeith into shape
Broughton's
Captain Johnny Wells celebrated his 30th Birthday in perfect style as his team beat Dalkeith
20-07 at Wardie on Saturday.
It was a vacuous Wardie Park
in comparison to last week's Cup Tie crowd however the Broughton forwards
carried on where they left off much to the delight of the smattering of
Broughton members who turned up.
Stand-Off Maddocks failed to
shake off a back knock sustained in the Cup game last week and was ruled out
during the warm up which resulted in Head Coach Graham Bonner shuffling his
backs. Broughton set out their stall
as early as the 5th minute when Urquhart capitalised from an Arrandale quick
tap penalty to bundle over for the opening score. By the end of the 1st
Quarter, Broughton looked as if they were cruising in for a comfortable
victory, adding a further 2 tries from Pyper and Man of the Match Pannell. The 4th try
seemed to take an age to come and Broughton's frustrations at over-complicated
plays and Referee Evans's (at times unique) interpretations of the Laws
resulted in the home side's Arrandale & O'Neill having a handbags at dawn
affair whilst in the Dalkeith 22.
The bonus point try came on
the hour mark with Nicolson notching up his 6th try of the season after
incessant Broughton pressure.
The four-try bonus point performance puts Broughton up into 4th place,
breathing down the neck of Hawick Linden who we travel to in our next League
fixture on 17th February.
Referee John Evans came into the Club after the
game with a finger bandaged up. Rumours of the whistler having suffered
from Repetitive Strain Injury from his penalty arm being raised so much are
totally unfounded!
The Birthday Boy was presented with a 'dirty
pint' following a collection whip-round from the team, which I understand
contained a selection of fine spirits*, and the lad from Leeds duly despatched
it in a respectable time. I understand that this assisted in his early
night departure from his Birthday Pub Crawl...
At night, the Brains of Broughton Quiz was won
by Grant Wilson's Team. A successful night saw many new faces down the
Club and one hopes to see them down again at future functions.
*Broughton Rugby reminds you to drink
responsibly.
Over the Bar: Interesting
to note that last week's 'P**s Poor Punch of the Season Award' winner,
Boroughmuir prop Cammy Ward, was at it again in the Meggatland side's 46-24
win over Hawick in their Super Cup fixture. Referee Andy Ireland sent
'Rocky' packing after only 6 minutes with a straight red card following an
altercation with Hawick's Mike Robertson.
Associated Club Edinburgh Accies
will be playing Top-Flight rugby next season after securing Promotion from
Premiership 2 with a 10-11 win away to Hamilton. Congratulations to Ian
Barnes et al at Raeburn Place on their fantastic achievement.
Also, congratulations to
Lasswade who were presented with the East League Division 1 Trophy following
their 43-0 win at home to Leith.
20/01/07 -
Broughton have all the Aces in the Pack
- Several
of the Boroughmuir side which last lost to Broughton attended the sell-out
Pre-Match Lunch and their minds must have flashed back to the 1964 defeat
after only 3 minutes when the underdogs from Broughton took at 3rd minute lead
in this National Cup 4th Round tie at Wardie.
Broughton's pack, who
dominated their Premiership 1 rivals throughout the game, built a sound platform
for Kiwi Man of the Match Sandy Urquhart to come out last from the masses of
Broughton bodies from a 10 metre driving maul to give the underdogs an early 5-0
lead!
Read the brief match resume
here, or why not visit our visitor's website for their view of Saturday's
game and watch the Boroughmuir tries, including Paul Maddison's wrestle/tackle
on Ross Cook (Paul, he needs to have the ball first matey!) which led to the
Penalty Try! Of course you can
watch highlights from Monday at
Scottish Rugby Television,
and
read about it in the Scotsman
& Edinburgh Evening News on Monday.

Many thanks to Broughton
member and part of the winning side George Simpson for this article from the
Evening News 'Pink' edition. |

13/01/07 - No divine intervention as Broughton lose in the rain
Broughton lost out 15-20 in foul conditions away
to Penicuik on Saturday in a game that should have seen us return from to the
Capital with full points and not the consolation loss bonus for finishing
within 7 points of our victors.
With one eye on next week's Cup Tie against
Premiership 1 outfit Boroughmuir, Broughton failed to capitalise on the
apparent advantage they had over their hosts towards the end of the 1st half.
By then however, the damage was done with Penicuik going 14-0 up inside the
opening quarter. Broughton rallied and scored on the stroke of half-time
when Urquhart's quick tap penalty saw the colossal Kiwi bulldoze over the
line. Penalties were exchanged early in the second half and it looked as
if Broughton could capitalise on the ever changing conditions when the brought
the Penicuik lead back to just two points with another Urquhart try from a
driving maul.
It wasn't to be however and with 10 minutes to
go, the Penicuik Stand-Off slotted another contentious penalty decision made
by the Antipodean match official to make the final score 20-15.
A win then for Penicuik who, unlike the Vicar of
Dibley, remain the 'Bridesmaid but never the Bride' of the East Region.
With only one team being Promoted from the Division this season (Lasswade are
runaway leaders with a 14 win unbeaten streak with 4 games to go) they stay
second top and await a further season to get out of the regional dogfight.
Results in the league from Saturday: Dunbar 6-36
Lasswade, Dalkeith 5-20 Hawick Quins, Leith 46-12 Northern, Hawick Linden 19-0
North Berwick.
Next up in the League is Dalkeith at Home on the
27th January and a win is vital. Before then there is the small matter
of the National Cup....
09 January
2007 - A fishy tale from our former Physio!

'IT was awesome!" David Rebus (extreme left)
exclaims as he rides a chairlift up a resort in Austria where he is teaching
snowboarding for the season.
He sounds like another Canadian
raving about the heavy dump of powder which has just turned the Tyrolean
mountains into heaven on earth for boarders. But the Edinburgh-born 34-year-old
is talking about fishing.
Former Broughton Physio Dave,
will be starring in STV's new 10 part
Nick Hancock's Fishing School which has it's first airing on Tuesday 9
January from 7.30pm.
09/01/07: Broughton await warm reception
at Penicuik - at least we will be guaranteed to get one!
Next week we are away to
second place Penicuik who scraped past Hawick Quins 14-16 down in the Borders.
Now, in case anyone missed the Evening News on the 4th January, you might not
be aware of the despair that ripped through many parts of the Mid Lothian town
on Hogmanay.
While 12.6 million viewers across the country
tuned in to watch Dawn French's popular Geraldine Granger character get married,
many Midlothian residents were left watching a blank screen.
Many lost their TV reception at about 9pm on
Hogmanay and didn't get it back until noon on Tuesday. The town cannot receive
digital broadcasts and will not get digital TV signals until the final
switchover from the existing analogue service in 2010.
Should anyone have a copy of this on video,
please bring it along and we could perhaps get Penicuik Rugby Club to organise a
public showing and help them raise some funds! http://edinburghnews.scotsman.com/index.cfm?id=18582007
07/01/07:
Baxter in the soup following knee catastrophe!
Broughton resumed normal service on Saturday as
they beat local rivals Leith, who were on a hat-trick of back to back wins
prior to the game, 35-19 at Wardie.
There were braces for Man of the Match Chris (Kitt)
Mollier-Alexander (left) and Adam McFarlane, who made a return to the side after
recovering from his fractured cheekbone at Lasswade last month. Also on
the score sheet were Flanker Chris O'Neill and the Galloping Giraffe Stan
Smith. The backs were abused in the changing rooms afterwards from their
bulkier counterparts following a whitewash in try count!
Match report available here....
