18/12/05 - Disbelief at Leith! - Broughton continued their downward spiral into the bottom half of the league after a 17-6 defeat at the hands of local rivals Leith on Saturday.  Despite taking an early 6-0 courtesy of Myles O'Hagan's boot, Broughton conspired to lose 17 unanswered points to lose a game in sub-zero conditions.

Due to reporting restrictions (lost my notes!), there is no match report.

12/11/05 - Kinross 21 - 15 Broughton - Broughton snatched defeat from the jaws of victory on Saturday as they failed to hold onto their lead as the game headed into injury time under the lights at Kinross.

It was a bitter blow to the Broughton side who had dominated most of the play, with the forwards once again making good use of the rolling maul.

We came away with a bonus point, but you have really got to say that it was 4 points lost.  2 tries from debutant Struan Smith and another from club stalwart Andy Turtle looked to have secured a win until the late horror show!

Match report is available here

13/11/05 - Lenzie take gloss off Matt's first try for Broughton

Broughton will have to do a bit of soul searching at training this week after a bitterly disappointing 20-53 loss at home to Lenzie.

Despite a car load of Lenzie players only arriving some 15 minutes prior to kick off and an early try for Broughton by Targowski, it was a No.10 inspired performance which won the game for Lenzie, who leapfrogged Broughton in the League table.

President Gerry Love commented that the game "was lost due to lack of first time tackles being made", with Vice-President Mark Brown echoing those words by adding that "it was bad day at the office for all, we just didn't compete after taking the early lead".

Next week we face St.Boswells at home.  The Borders side have been on the receiving end of some heavy defeats this season, but they wont be taken lightly.  A win is vital as is your support.

A match report can be viewed here.

30/10/05 - Emergency Ward's boot heals Broughton - Stand-In Stand-Off Mark Ward kicked Broughton to a much needed victory away to Cumnock on Saturday.

Broughton made heavy weather of it in foul conditions at Broomfield and were happy to come away with the points in a 14-10 win.  Match report here

No league positions changed this weekend as the results all went to plan.  Waysiders beat Kinross 15-10, League leaders Dumfries destroyed Forrester 60-3 as they march towards the title and Madras made it back to back wins over Edinburgh sides with a convincing 37-7 win at home against Leith.  For St. Boswells it was business as usual with a 121-0 defeat away to Lenzie.

23/10/05 - Madras too hot for Broughton - Broughton's emphatic start to the season seems a distant memory as they lost their 4th consecutive league fixture at a cold & wet Wardie on Saturday.

New boy Matt Targowski started his first game for Broughton on the wing as the Wardie outfit looked to bounce back from a string of defeats which has seen them drop out of the top four automatic promotion places.

A fairly decent sized crowd (i.e. greater than the sum total of the substitutes!) watched an entertaining match, made more exciting by a pre-Xmas flurry of cards by Referee Andy Waite in the second half.  Match report here

16/10/05 - Dumped in Dumfries - Broughton's pack were collectively awarded the Visitor's Man of the Match prize for their hard work in a 29-07 defeat away to Dumfries.

The result may be slightly flattering of the hosts who were handed a boost when Payne left the field midway through the 1st half with a recurrence of his sternum injury.

The Broughton squad, thrown together on Friday evening by Sid, Bubba and your tirelessly working webmaster, will feature heavily in a reconstruction of M.A.S.H. in the physio room on Thursday!

04/09/05 - Broughton kicked off their Division 4 Campaign in style with an emphatic 17 try victory away to St. Boswells.

No fewer than 11 different Broughton players crossed the home try line in what was a near perfect display in weather, more accustomed to St. Kitts than St. Boswells, for free flowing rugby.

The pick of the tries came in the 36th minute after Sean Smith collected the ball in his own 22 from a restart.  The ball was quickly distributed out to Chris Mowbray on the wing who run a full 50 metres and with one defender to beat, he unselfishly popped a pass to newly appointed Captain, Mike MacLennan to score the 2nd of his hat-trick haul.

2nd row Adam McFarlane, who gained Scotland A Rugby League International honours in the summer, also grabbed a hat-trick and they were joined on the board by Maddison, Stewart & Beaton who each gabbed braces.  There were single scores apiece for Payne, Wells, Pyper, Else, Hart & Mowbray.  Maddocks converted 8 kicks, whilst Payne & Else got in on the act with 1 each.

02/09/05 - 'Mad' Mike MacLennan has been voted as Club Captain ahead of the opening clash of the season against St.Boswells.

Aussie Gareth Payne, who turned down a summer move to Ulster, earned the Vice-Captain vote of the players.

"It's an honour for Gareth and I to lead the team this season, especially after such a terrific one last year with Melvin at the helm." Said Mike after receiving the accolade. "This year we need again to focus on the mantra - 'that what we put in, will determine what we take out'. We have the ability to do very well in our new league, so we must strive to maximise our potential at all times - both on and off the field - and it's a pleasure to hear Johnny's already got the ball rolling, with our Club Curry Night next weekend!"

27/08/05 - Broughton 15 - 7 Oban Lorne - A Broughton side, thrown together at the last minute with some bizarre positional requests being made, took on an Oban side in the final warm up before next week's Division 4 opener away at St.Boswells.

Devoid of powerhouse Dunc the Destroyer and Scotland Rugby League Internationalist Adam McFarlane, one wondered if the sizeable Oban pack was going to win the game for the tourists.  It wasn't to be as the Broughton forwards, including debutant Lloyd Baxter, held their own and won the battle of the bulge!

Gareth Payne, our resident Hoffmeister, slotted a penalty kick early in the 1st half to open the scoring.  Broughton tries came from Andy Turtle, after fine work from Grant Wilson who steamrollered a ruck fringer almost across the dead ball area and from Melvin 'I thought it was a 3pm kick-off?' Hart who's fine angled running allowed him to go in under the posts unchallenged.  Chris Mowbray added the conversion.

24/04/05 - Bibby Factors Scotland Broughton 7's - Nottingham University have won the 2005 Bibby Factors Scotland Broughton 7's.  On their way to picking up the trophy, they scored a mammoth 179 points in their 4 matches, including a 70-0 whitewash of the hosts in the Final.

Walkerburn were the bridesmaids for a second year running in the Plate Final, this time losing out to a Currie/Lasswade Select 45-14.

A big mention to Berwick who brought a bus up with 2 teams for their 2/3rd XV 'Badger's Outing'.  It was apparent from early on that their intentions of reaching the bar first was their goal and they achieved it in style.  Well done guys!

11/04/05 - An under strength and decidedly hungover Broughton Barbarians side lost 73-0 to the Swedish National Team at Wardie on Sunday.  Missing most of the back division that defeated Lasswade, Broughton simply couldn't keep up with the pace of the Swedes who defeated Haddington 53-22 the previous day.   A return match in Stockholm is on the cards for next April.....watch this website for details!

10/04/05 - Broughton won the National League Division 5 (East) title in the dying minutes on Saturday thanks to a bonus point 31-12 win over Lasswade.

The five try victory for the Wardie men means that they pipped Penicuik to top the table and progress to National League Division Four.

Broughton President Gerry Love (pictured) saw his charges pick up silverware for the 1st time in 23 years and it was worth waiting every minute for!

07/04/05 - The eagerly awaited friendly against the Swedish National Side (the Men's side I am afraid!) takes place this Sunday (10/04).  This match will kick off at 12 noon.  More on this story here

03/04/05 -  No limp reaction after losing a semi!  - Broughton were edged out of the BT Bowl 24-12 in Sunday's Semi-Final at Ardrossan.  Read the Touchy Typo's match report here!

26/03/05 - O'Neal injured but Linden smashed! - "No other human power can match that of determination. It has the potential to create heaven or hell not just for oneself, but also for the world. It is the ultimate terminator, unstoppable and invincible..."

Or see the Match Report for Hawick Linden here!

12/03/05 - Broughton's Paul Hamer was the toast of Wardie after a dramatic try in injury time gave the home side a 19-18 win over National 3 outfit Lismore on Saturday.

Broughton seemed to have snatched defeat from the jaws of victory midway through the 2nd half, but it was the Aussie Hamer who battered his way through the opponents defence to put the Club into this week's Semi-Final draw.  Read your webmaster's post-wedding / pre-honeymoon match report on-line here!

08/03/05 - Broughton's bearded giant, Stan Smith has finally lost his marbles! The big un-co-ordinated one is taking part in a sponsored raft race on the 20th March and is looking for sponsors. The race is in aid of Chest, Heart and Stroke Scotland and details are here.

If you want to sponsor him just drop Stan an email.  If you want to do the gift aid thing he'll need your address. All donations are welcome for this worthy

06/03/05 - Broughton hit North Berwick for 6 on Saturday as they kept the pressure on Pencuik who now lead the table by 4 points.  A 40-07 win was enough to secure a vital bonus point with 2 home matches to go.  Webmasters report here

28/02/05 - Murrayfield of dreams still on! - Broughton are 2 matches away from Murrayfield after disposing of a stuffy Alloa side 17-0 away from home on Sunday.

Tries from Andy Dalgleish, Hamish Martineau and Neil Mathews secured a 1/4 Final home tie against Lismore on March 12th.  Read the report here

On Saturday, the BATS development side defeated Italian side AS Lainate 17-7 in a pre-international friendly.

20/02/05 - Hart-trick pulls victory out of the bag. Broughton kept the pressure on Penicuik with a hard fought, if at times unconvincing, win away at Dalkeith by 39-10 on Saturday.

Captain Melvin Hart lead by example notching a hat-trick of tries, however, this was not enough to prevent 'Mad' Mike MacLennan from winning the coveted Man of the Match award. Joining Melvin on the try scoring charts this week were Dan Arrandale, Hamish Martineau and Duncan Nicolson all with 1 try each.

A 50% conversation rate from Hamer, combined with a exquisite 47 metre penalty kick from a tight angle in the 2nd half ensured the visitors left Kings Park with a win.

29/01/05 - Keeping the dream alive... - Broughton continued to keep the pressure on league leaders Penicuik with a 21-7 win at Lasswade on Saturday.  Read the match report here brought to you this week by Guest Reviewer, Broughton prop, Jonny Wells!
