That was the Season that was....Richard's 2003/04 rundown

On the 18th April we held our Fun Day – and one of the P5s asked – "Richard, why is the rugby season so short?"……I hope all the children have had the same enjoyment throughout last season.  As for me – my mind instantly went to Ronnie Barker’s character Arkwright – in Open All Hours!  The season runs form August to August. Currently it's next year's fixtures on Monday, it’s the District end of season meeting June & July SRU have invites out to bring along teams to events – dates too far for the coaches and children – its time for a break. As for the season :-

S1 and above:
Firstly I am delighted to report that the Junior Section had our first internationalist with Ruairidh Bonner, who came up through the age groups representing Belgium Schools under 16s against a French Provincial school side.  Ruairidh also kicked the winning points.

Thanks to Gerry & the Committee we had Jim 'The Pig' Michie out and about at local schools. Using the banner of “Tigers” – this produced more players (now we have 12) -  although not enough to support a team.  We plan to have Jim out and about for next season.  Many thanks to Jim, Martin Scott and Andy Turtle for their efforts and dedication during last season.

Primary Age Groups

We currently have around 30 children on the Books.  Last year we ran P1-3, P4/5 & P6/7 boosted by three excellent children from the P5 age group. There are some very promising players throughout these age groups and we had some very impressive performances throughout the season. One interesting side issue arose in connection with our matches at Haddington – all players had to play in the same age group as Haddington had experienced insurance problems. I took the matter up with the SRU & almost two months later I received the SRU directive that you can only bridge two age groups at primary level.
For the last event – the wonderfully organised Dunbar Tournament, all the children were magnificent and deserved all the medals they received. Unfortunately we had Daniel Warren taken to hospital with the head injury. Happily, he was back to full health when I visited him a few days later to present him with his medal. I am delighted to report that our P5/4s won the Tournament with some outstanding play and fully deserved their gold medals. Superb – well done to all the children.

I mentioned our Fun Day – apart from the wellie boot throwing, horseshoe tossing etc we presented the Player's Player of the Year Awards. These deservedly went to Murray Devine for the P5/4 and to Donald Miller for the P7/6.

In trying to induce more players to the club Jim Michie had come up with the idea to use “Tigers” hats to lure players to the club.  Thanks to Mark Brown these were presented to the current players and the shear joy on Gregor Devine as he received his was an absolute joy to behold – made my day.

My sincere thanks to :-
To Gerry & the Committee for total support.
To Sandy Scott for keeping the necessary sweets juice etc available
To Jimmy Calder & all other with the help behind the bar
To the coaches :- Alistair Strong, Philip Dawson, Grant Hutchison, Dave Ferguson, Colin Devine, Calum Muir.
Ladies & Donald Miller’s sister for the catering. But mainly thanks to the children.
If you can help next year please do so – it’s essential for our future.
