Lucky 13 as Broughton go try crazy!

Broughton bounced back from the previous week's disappointment at Dunbar by producing their best rugby display of the season in this 13 try demolition of relegation candidates Hawick Harlequins.

Jerry Harper was the star of the show grabbing a personal haul of 5 tries in the 65-05 win, which remarkably saw none of the scores being converted!

The Club would also like to thank The Urquhart Clan who have come along to watch Sandy and the Team during their visit to the Capital.  The enthusiasm and encouragement offered by them, especially Sandy's mum, should be bottled and sold worldwide to all parents involved in sport!

Broughton started the match in fine form after Quins kicked-off down the Wardie slope but the ball didn't make it past the 10 metre line.  Lenihan was first in the act taking the ball for a trademark run however the Irishman decided to cut back inside when he may well have had the beating of his counterpart on the touchline.

It didn't take long though for the opening try and it was the forwards who were instrumental in setting up the score.  The rolling maul up the middle of the park was too much for the visitors to deal with and Arrandale's quick distribution to Pannell allowed the Kiwi to draw in the last man and pop the ball to Lenihan to go in the corner for try 1. 5-0.

A penalty to Broughton on 12 minutes saw the pack drive to the corner and from nowhere, Urquhart popped up at the back for the easiest of scores.  10-0.

The Quins No8 spilled a kick through by Lenihan in the 16th minute and the subsequent scrum in midfield set up a maul and with Urquhart causing chaos with his strength, he made sufficient ground before setting up the ruck.  Arrandale set up the back line who shipped the ball out wide and Pannell could even afford a juggle before grounding the ball.  15-0.

Quins showed character after the early setbacks and scored a try of their own after 26 minutes.  McFarlane lost possession in the middle of the park in contact and enterprising back play saw the winger outstrip Harper in the dash for the corner.  15-5 and the contest was back on.

Wilson replaced Baxter on the half hour after the Ulsterman landed awkwardly after disrupting another Quins lineout.

I know what you are thinking by now.  30 minutes on and where is this 5 try Harper guy?

38 minutes elapsed before the former Watsonian player got on the scoresheet.  Traylor opened up the Quins defence with a tricky run and with the aid of Pannell, the ball made it out to Harper who was hugging the touchline to score the bonus point try.  20-5.

The visitors weren't throwing in the towel yet and almost snatched a lifeline on the stroke of half-time.  A penalty for Broughton straying offside saw the Quins 10 kick for the corner.  Lenihan tried to keep the ball in play however he only succeeded to lose track of the ball and it went into touch.  The Quins pack attempted to execute the rolling maul, however a combination of Wells and Wilson prevented any further breach of the Broughton line.  Half Time 20-5.

The second half started in a similar vein to the first with Broughton on the attack, this time down the Wardie slope.

Urqhuart burst through the middle and he was drifting to the wing to set up Harper for an easy score.  However, McFarlane wasn't reading the script and he tried to intercept the pass for himself and only managed to knock the ball forward!

The pressure paid off shortly after when Harper went in for his second try.  Heenan's run through the middle of the field opened up a chance to release Harper and he made it over the line, bouncing off two defenders to help him get over the whitewash.  25-5.

McFarlane made amends for his earlier over-eagerness in the 52nd minute after Urqhuart burst through the defence before passing to Pannell who was sitting on his shoulder on the outside.  Pannell drew in the last man before putting in McFarlane who was obviously having a rest, sitting out there on the wing.  30-5.

Broughton by this point were rampant with Urquhart carrying the ball in one hand and effortlessly handing-off the opposition at every attempt.

Pannell doubled his try tally in the 55th minute after Arrandale's long telling pass from the scrum made the acre of space for the Kiwi to run in unapposed.  35-5.

Traylor almost set Broughton on the road to another score on the Quins 22 after collecting the restart, but Keenan, who appeared to be suffering still from the Dunbar hangover, couldn't keep hold of the ball as he steam trained it through the middle.

The home side didn't have long to wait for try number eight after Urquhart ripped the ball and Harper put in Lenihan for a try. 40-5. By this stage, the Broughton forwards were obviously unimpressed by their backs efforts at conversion attempts.  Up stepped Mohamed, the pint sized hooker, on the touchline.  Khal, my advice is to concentrate on your throwing....

A Traylor chip kick, akin to those traditionally executed by injured Mathews who was watching from the sidelines, bounced on it's nose however Keenan couldn't gather.

Try number nine involved the front row in a passing move.  Arrandale set up Wells who made good ground, Nicolson was quick in support and the Broughton stalwart held onto the ball in time for Harper to run on to his sympathetic pass to collect his hat-trick try.  45-5.

Atkins came on as a replacement for the hard working Arrandale and was quick to get into the action.  He made a telling run and was stopped on the 22, Tyson collected the pieces and he was thwarted inches from the line, but the second rower managed to squeeze the ball out to Harper who dived into the corner.  50-5.

The best try of the day came with 10 minutes to go.  Wilson made a break and was in uncharted territory of being free of opposition players.  A nose bleed situation normally for the replacement so to temper his excitement, he gave the ball to Mohamed.  The wee man didn't hold about before releasing Atkins and without thinking twice (and some may have when he saw who was asking for it!) he passed to Keenan who's quick move and pass set Malcolm in for a try.  Fast, dynamic rugby from the home side which, I understand, but have no photographic proof, saw Head Coach Bonner with a smile on his face!  55-5.

Harper made it 60-5 with 5 minutes left on the clock after Traylor put him into space.

Traylor scored with the final play of the game as he ran through a Quins defence who were keen for the comfort of a beer in the bar.   65-5.  This was the first try within 15 feet of the posts and the crowd were expecting a conversion duck being broke.  Unfortunately they were to be disappointed as the try scorer attempted surely the worst drop kick attempt ever seen at Wardie ;-)
