Broughton
notched up their 6th league victory in a row over North Berwick in conditions
that could only be described as a typically Scottish winter's day.
Freezing cold and driving rain looked as if it would cancel out any hope of a
decent game however, Broughton produced some of their best rugby of the season
to win 10-0.
The victory came at a cost however, with Johnny Beaton - perhaps Scotland's most
unluckiest player this season - spending 4 hours in the Edinburgh Royal
Infirmary on Saturday night after sustaining a fractured cheekbone in a first
half collision with a stray knee.
After losing heavily on the road to Hawick Linden last week, it was a welcome
return to Fortress Wardie and 4 points for a Broughton side who just will not
give up hope of winning the Championship.
With North Berwick down the Wardie slope in the first half accompanied by a
driving wind and rain combo, all eyes were on the visitors back division who had
gain many plaudits so far this season.
They forced Broughton into two errors within the opening ten minutes however
both penalty kick attempts failed to make the distance or find the accuracy
required to give the visitors the lead.
Broughton made them pay for this in the 23rd minute when a scrum 20 metres out
set up an opportunity to attack the North Berwick line.
Arrandale collected the ball at the base of the scrum and popped it back inside
to the on-rushing Urqhuart. The colossal Kiwi rumbled on towards the
try-line before setting up McFarlane who ran over the unfortunate
youngster who was between the big back-rower and 5 points. 5-0 and an
unsuccessful conversion attempt from the touchline, which, giving the conditions
wasn't a crime.
Much of the game saw Broughton play the conditions better than their opponents,
opting for the up-the-jumper style of rugby that commentators criticised last
year's Premier 1 Champions Currie for relying on.
Head Coach Graham Bonner was quiet on the sideline, which caused concern for
those on the touchline, but it seemed to be more down to his delight at his
charges actually playing the game that he had asked them to carry out!
Half-time came and at 5-0 with the wind and slope to come, it was set to be 40
minutes of tough, competitive rugby for the home side as they looked to build on
their lead.
They had to wait until the 65th minute and it was a fantastic forwards move that
doubled the Broughton advantage. A trademark Broughton rolling maul saw
the Wardie boys creep close to the washed-out whitewash and up came Urquhart
to use his brute strength to bundle over. The referee took time to adjust
his position before awarding the score however it was never in doubt despite the
remonstrations by the North Berwick Captain who remained vocal towards the match
official, potentially the finest to officiate a Broughton fixture this season,
even after the final whistle. 10-0.
North Berwick rallied as the light faded but they just couldn't breach the
Broughton defence which was tighter than Dan Arrandale on a night out!
So, a great return to Fortress Wardie after 4 matches on the road. Next
week we see the final game of 2007 at home to our old rivals Leith.
Kick-off is at 2pm and we would love to see you there.
