Broughton go into the hat for the 2nd Round draw of the SHE
Cup after a second half recovery saw them finish off plucky Inverleith 31-13 on
Saturday.
Head Coach Graeme Bonner didn't have his troubles to seek in the warm-up when he
lost Johnny Beaton with a hamstring pull and Chris O'Neill who may have pulled
on a Broughton jersey for the last time. 'Demon' popped his shoulder in an
accidental brush with 'Comeback Kid' Lloyd Baxter, making his first appearance
since dislocation of his knee against Leith at the start of 2007, and despite
attempts to put it back in as he has done many times already this season, it
just kept on popping back out!
Maddocks started the game for Broughton on the tight pitch and misjudged the
size of the park and kicked out on the full. Broughton had obviously left
their luck down at Wardie where they changed before the game!
Arrandale made a nuisance of himself at the resultant scrum and he forced his
opposite number into a mistake which he attempted to capitalise on however he
was held back in the process. Maddocks welcomed the opportunity to put the
visitors ahead. 0-3.
The lead lasted all of 3 minutes when Arrandale was harshly adjudged to have
strayed offside at a scrum and the Inverleith stand-off managed to just get
enough height on his kick to scrape over the crossbar. 3-3.
A double transgression from the Inverleith flanker offered Broughton a chance to
go ahead, instead Arrandale took a quick tap as Broughton attempted to tighten
their grip on the game. The play progressed towards the Inverleith line
and Maddocks found himself with enough time to slot over a finely weighted
drop-goal. 3-6.
Inverleith were awarded a cheap penalty attempt in the 26th minute after the
match official deemed Tyson to have infringed at the line out, despite the
bearded boy seemingly only contesting. The Inverleith No.10 obliged by
making the scores level again at 6-6.
On the half-hour it was the home side who took advantage of a somewhat
lacklustre Broughton back division and the scrum-half was delighted to have so
much space to run into which allowed him to score under the posts, sending the
home crowd wild. The extras were kicked and a potential Cup shock was on
the cards at 13-6.
Broughton came to life with 5 minutes to go before the interval. Tyson
stole the ball at an Inverleith line-out and Arrandale distributed quick ball
out to Matthews in the centre. Matthews drew his man and set up Keenan who
ran to the line but was tackled just inches away from the whitewash.
Malcolm was up with him in support and Keenan popped the ball out to Bombhead to
score in the corner. Maddocks was unable to get the conversion from the tight
angle. 13-11.
It could and probably should have been Broughton going into the break in the
lead had the referee not spotted an infringement in the dead-ball area after a
tremendous Broughton driving maul from 20 metres out.
The second half started with Broughton giving away possession early on with
Wilson attempting a 'Vickery' on the Inverleith winger as he tried to clear the
ball from his 22.
Broughton were awarded a 46th minute penalty after Inverleith were penalised for
being offside and Maddocks put Broughton's noses back in front, 13-14.
Worse was to follow for the home side as they conceded another penalty 60
seconds later. The Inverleith pack were once again guilty of not
retreating as their No.10 put a Garry Owen high into the clear autumn sky.
Maddocks converted to make it 13-17.
Fragne put clear distance between the sides in the 55th minute when he waltzed
over for a try following neat interchanges between Arrandale, Matthews and
Keenan. Maddocks converted to make the score 13-24.
Matthews got in on the act with a try of his own to secure the victory after a
Maddocks up and under caused all sorts of mayhem and Tyson won the battle for
the loose ball and he set up Matthews to run in under the posts. Maddocks
put the icing on the cake with another conversion. Final Score: 13-31.
