President has to miss Moffat as he was eating his Turks away!

With Club President Mark Brown jetting off after the Battle of the BATS success to the sunnier climes of Turkey, Club Captain Johnny Wells brings you the low-down from Saturday's victory against West Regional League 1 outfit Moffat Rams.  It is just a pity that Brown was back in time to right the appalling headline!

After the success in the BATS tournament the previous week it was all change in the backs line for the Broughton team this week, due to many players being away and which lead to the inclusion of head coach Graham Bonner at full back. The side were facing a team from Moffat, that according to their website was decimated by call offs, holiday and work commitments and arrived with minimum number of players.

Moffat where still able to field a big, strong stuffy side who had been
drilled well and contested the breakdown very effectively and had they been able to match this vigour with a spark of attack may have troubled the Broughton side a lot more.

Broughton started playing the match up the slope and took little time in establish a physical dominance in the game and although held most of the possession failed to turn it into points with several close misses of Duncan Nicolson dropping the ball over the line, Rhys Williams being held up and Bombers putting a foot in touch before reaching the try line. The physical dominance paid off though through a driving maul after 28 mins with Duncan coming up with the points giving Broughton a 5-0 half time lead.

Once the half time team talks had been given the Wardie hill helped the Broughton side exert further pressure with strong running from the backs by Darragh Lenihan and Davy Dickson on their return to action and from guest centre Ewen Tweedie. As the Moffat line became tired gaps began to appear which lead to further tries for Neil Matthews, Adam McFarlane and Ewen Tweedie (or was it Darragh as per other reports hitting the hub of activity that is my inbox? - The Ed) to give Broughton a final score line of 20-0.

Overall an excellent defensive performance with Moffat never threatening our line however offensively we will need to improve our finishing if we are to be at our best for the opening match of the season against Penicuik.

Why not enjoy our opponents view of proceedings at their fairly jazzy website - http://www.moffat-rugby.com/news/article/172/
