A Hat-Trick from Adam McFarlane, affectionately
nicknamed 'Hooch' off the field, helped Broughton sign off their Home campaign
in style with an impressive 35-0 demolition of Dunbar.
The 21 year old back-rower, who
made his Edinburgh Accies 1st XV debut two weeks ago, was in great form and even
managed to get in the regulatory hat-trick jugs after the game!! McFarlane
has been something of a nemesis for the East Lothian side, having scored 5 out
of his 9 tries this season against them!
Broughton started the game like
they meant business and were 3-0 to the good within the opening 60 seconds.
The Dunbar line was penalised for being offside at a ruck on their 22.
Maddocks found his kicking boots this week and we were off to a flyer! 3-0.
The early exchanges were all
too much for the visitors and Broughton scored their first of the afternoon's 5
tries after only 4 minutes. Hirubalan went on the run up the wing and as
he was being bundled into touch, he fed the ball back for Urquhart to collect
the loose ball and the Kiwi strolled over for his 10th try of the season.
Maddocks failed to get the extras, but he may have been put off by the cries of
abuse from the Wardie faithful who reminded Sandy of his late night conquests
last Saturday....
It was unlikely 13 for Dunbar
when, in that minute, a strange set of events denied them a chance to get back
into the game. A penalty was awarded by the Army based match official who
claimed that a Broughton arm deliberately knocked down the ball as Dunbar got
within 20 metres of the try line. Captain Tubby appeared to signal for the
posts, but this was ignored by the ref who was too busy marching the Broughton
team back an additional 10 metres for dissent. Before the Dunbar Captain
to confirm his choice of move, their 2nd rower picked up the ball and embarked
on a solo expedition. Sadly, the other 14 men from the coast were thinking
of 3 points and he was penalised for holding on after being held up on the 5
metre line!
A quarter of the match came and
went with Broughton's superiority not being reflected on the scoreboard.
However, Adam McFarlane had other ideas. A stunning interchange of passes
between Arrandale, Maddocks and Matthews from a line out on the Dunbar 22
created a gap for the on-rushing McFarlane who was never going to be stopped.
Maddocks kicked the extras and it was 15-0.
Pannell retired on 25 minutes
after pulling a hamstring, forcing Head Coach Graham Bonner into a tactical
change. French Fireman Fragne went to wing and Maddison went to full back.
It look liked it had paid off
instantly when the backs played some running rugby and had put in Matthews for a
great try. Unfortunately the whistler had other ideas and he ruled that an
infringement of some sort had taken place.
Worse was to follow for the
visitors after half an hour when they were forced to play out the half whilst
reduced to 14 men. The Dunbar stand-off was given time to cool down after
swearing at the match official. From the resultant penalty kick, Maddocks
made it a half-time score of 18-0.
Broughton came out of the traps
like a greyhound on speed for the second half and were unlucky not to run in a
score shortly after the restart. Urquhart won the ball from a stray Dunbar
line out and the ball went along the line from Maddocks to Fragne then to
Fairlie, who ran a full 30 metres to the Dunbar 22 and with Maddison on his
inside he threw a stinker which Maddison's Go Gadget arms couldn't collect!
It took until the 53rd minute
for Broughton to break down the Dunbar wall again. Arrandale ferreted
about at the base of a ruck and flipped the ball back inside to Urquhart who
slipped it to McFarlane to stroll in. 23-0.
Nicolson grabbed Broughton's
fourth try to ensure a bonus point on the hour mark as the juggernaut that is
the Broughton pack gathered pace whilst pushing the tired Dunbar pack down the
Wardie slope. The fluffy headed prop guided the pack over the line after a
rolling maul drove in from a full 20 metres. 28-0.
McFarlane grabbed his
opportunity to buy the team jugs after the game when he scored his 3rd of the
day and his sides 5th. Fragne showed that he is no l'escargot and his pace
opened up the Dunbar defence. With only the full back to beat, he looked
up and popped up to McFarlane who surprisingly didn't drop the ball when he
realised the consequences of scoring. Maddocks kicked for the 2 points and
it was 35-0.
It was oh so nearly the perfect
send of for Paul Maddison in the final minute. The Dunbar full back failed
to find touch and the usual Meandering Maddison put his foot on the gas and
jinked inside and outside only to slip in the quagmire on the 5 metre line.
He failed to regain his footing and his chance of glory was denied!
Final Score - Broughton 35-0
