Broughton have all the Aces in the Pack

Several of the Boroughmuir side which last lost to Broughton attended the sell-out Pre-Match Lunch and their minds must have flashed back to the 1964 defeat after only 3 minutes when the underdogs from Broughton took at 3rd minute lead in this National Cup 4th Round tie at Wardie.

Broughton's pack, who dominated their Premiership 1 rivals throughout the game, built a sound platform for Kiwi Man of the Match Sandy Urquhart to come out last from the masses of Broughton bodies from a 10 metre driving maul to give the underdogs an early 5-0 lead!

Not to be outshone by their opponents of the dizzy heights of top level rugby, the Broughton forwards kept the contest a spectacle and kept a glimmer of Cup shock potential when they grabbed another on the half-hour which dragged the score back to a respectable 10-21.  Urquhart orchestrated the movement at the back of the maul after being played into space from a deft Arrandale inside flick from a 10 metre scrum.  The Kiwi set up drive for his fellow country-man Chris Mollier-Alexander to bundle over from close range.

By half time it was 10-35 to Boroughmuir but Broughton were certainly still in the game and they started the second half in the same vein as the first.  On the move up the Wardie slope from the restart, Broughton once again took it to the opposition and were unfortunate not to get another score as the forward pack battered their way towards the try line.

The Boroughmuir website have taken the trouble to write a match report which you can read here as your webmaster found it difficult to concentrate enough throughout the match to put pen to paper for any periods of time to record the key incidents of the afternoon.

Of course you can watch highlights at Scottish Rugby Television, and read about it in the Scotsman & Edinburgh Evening News all on Monday.

Boroughmuir Team Manager Grant Wilson commented after the game that the Broughton pack punched way above their weight throughout the tie and was full of praise for the East Region side.

The final score of 10-71 somewhat flattered the Boroughmuir side who scored the majority of their tries from breakaways after missed opportunities from the hosts.  At least 2 of these scores came after Broughton were camped in the visitors 22 for lengthy periods only for the possession not to be turned into points.

What was particularly pleasing for the largely partizan crowd was that the initial pre-match fear of Broughton dying off with a quarter of the match to go simply did not materialise and Borughton were on the push for more tries in this pulsating match right up until the final whistle.

A great day then on and off the pitch, as the Club filled after the game as the sleet came down!  A bumper pay day for Broughton who now play in the 1st Round of the new Plate Competition.  The draw, which will take place midweek at Murrayfield, will include many of the teams from Round 4 due to the inclement weather at the weekend that caused around half of the ties to be postponed.

The Pre-Match build-up

Many thanks to Broughton member and part of the winning side George Simpson for this article from the Evening News 'Pink' edition.

In the run up to the Big Game, Broughton President Mark A Brown (pictured left) appeared on the Monday's (15th Jan) edition of the Scottish Rugby Radio show, where he was speaking with Stuart Cameron as the Cup Countdown begins. The Internet based programme, hosted by Cameron &  Richie Gray also looks at the latest rugby news north of the border.

The Media bus continued to gather momentum with Broughton Captain Johnny Wells featuring in last Friday's Edinburgh Evening News speaking to Chief Rugby Reporter Bill Lothian, giving his thoughts and fears on the highest profile fixture the Club have played for some years.

Also last Friday, Club President Mark A Brown hit the airwaves for the second time that week, appearing on Radio Forth with their Sports Reporter Mark Donaldson previewing the game on their sports bulletins.  With more spin than Shane Warne, Brown insisted that Broughton were not just turning up to make up the numbers!

Finally, Scottish Rugby Television had the cameras down at Wardie and a  highlights package which will be shown exclusively on their website from Monday 22nd and plans are in place to allow you to purchase a copy of Club history shortly afterwards!
