With both Broughton
and Moray House given byes into Round 2 of the Cup, a free Saturday
was used by both sides to give players a run on a blustery day at
Wardie.
Moray House started
the game eager to get some game time under their belt following
various call-offs in earlier league ties this season and they
certainly didn't seem ring-rusty when they took the lead after only 8
minutes. A perfectly executed skyward Garry Owen was collected
by Broughton's Robert 'Bombhead' Malcolm who appeared to call for the
'mark' in his 22. The Moray House chasing pack didn't appear to
have retreating the necessary 10 metres when Malcolm went to clear his
lines with the kick and it was controversially charged down, collected
and bundled over the line for a score. 0-5.
The visitors had a
chance to extend their lead 5 minutes later after the match official
penalised Broughton for diving over at the ruck. Fortunately the
paint of the upright was all that prevented the kick from being
successful.
Maddocks had the
opportunity of a kick of his own to claw back the deficit after 21
minutes when Moray House were caught offside. His kick, from
bang in front, was slotted over. 3-5.
A moment of madness
by rookie scrum-half George Koo on the half hour set up a try for the
visitors who looked as if they had come with their Cup head on.
Koo attempted a cross field kick which wouldn't have looked out of
place on a Jeremy Beadle out-take show and the it was gratefully
accepted by the Moray House man who ran a fair length to run in under
the posts. The extras were added and it was a rude awakening for
the Broughton boys with the score at 03-12.
On the stroke of
half-time, Broughton got a slice of luck themselves as Maddocks
intercepted a stray pass in the Moray House 10 metre area and he drew in
the last defending player to set up 'Mullet-Man' Christopher Mollier-Alexander
for an easy run in under the uprights. Maddocks obliged with
the kick to edge Broughton back into contention at the break only 10-12
down.
Whatever was included
in Broughton Head Coach Graham Bonnar's half-time speech certainly
worked wonders as the home side ran in 6 unanswered scores in the second
stanza.
The floodgates opened 5
minutes after the restart. Singaporean Internationalist Prem
Hirubalm opened his Broughton try tally after interactive play with
Frenchman Francois Fragne. It was a slightly laboured run up the
wing by the duo but support play was there and a well worked try to put
the Broughton noses back in front. Maddocks converted to make it
17-12.
Broughton put some
daylight between the sides some 7 minutes later after a deceptively slow
break by George Koo through the middle either caught the Moray House
players in disbelief at the pace being generated (downhill as well!!)
and his pass to Prem seemed to put the Edinburgh Uni Student in for
another score. He was caught a metre short of the line as he
seemed to slow down instead of speed up! Mollier-Alexander
collected the ball from the ruck that developed and scored what was
possibly his easiest try of his Broughton career. 22-12
On the hour, the Moray
House legs were started to rule their head and Adam McFarlane
popped up on the wing (are my notes correct?!!) unopposed to get on the
end of a pass to dive in / fall over from 2 yards. 27-12.
Man of the Match Sandy
Urqhuart collected the ball from the restart and sent himself on a
demolition job of the Moray House team. Met with the chasing pack,
he duly knocked one on his bum with consummate ease the proceeded to run
amok before pushing the ball into the path of the rampaging hooker Pyper.
His legs were tapped on the Moray House 22 just when he say the
whitewash of the try-line in his sights but great support play from
McFarlane saw the big No8 run in for a comfortable score under the
posts which Maddocks converted. 34-12.
Danish trialist (and
internationalist it appears) Eric (surname tbc!) scored on his
Broughton debut minutes later. The attempted clearance from the
Moray House 22 didn't reach touch and the young Dane collected the ball
on half-way and waltzed along the touchline to run in under the sticks.
A Maddocks drop-kick completed his points contribution. 41-12.
The final try came in
the 68th minute as Broughton turned defence into attack from the base of
a ruck. Bombhead, who slotted into the scrum-half berth well
following Koo's substitution, passed the ball out to Urqhuart and the
rampaging Kiwi took the ball up to half-way and held off the attentions
of a couple of Moray House guys to release McFarlane who in turn thought
better of trying to run the distance, instead he pushed the ball outside
for Hirubalm to score his second of the day. 46-12. |
