Broughton have Bouncebackability

Broughton were determined to show their bouncebackability after losing in last week’s game against Lasswade and answered their critics with a 12-6 win against near neighbours Edinburgh Northern.

Broughton kick off and good forward play keeps then deep in the EN half. A 5m scrum after 5 mins was passed through the backs to allow Dickson in to score. Neil converts for 7-0 after 5 mins!

Broughton basically camp in the EN half again after the restart, with a battle ensuing in midfield with neither side taking advantage. Some good play from Maddison on 15 mins as he caught a high ball deep in the Broughton half and jinked through the EN defence to make a large gain. Sadly turned over and scrum to EN though!

More midfield attrition led to EN getting a penalty (for handing on ground? Ref was pretty bizarre in some decisions!) on the 35 min mark and converting this to bring the score to 7-3. Just before half time Broughton had another kickable penalty, but Neil's kick didn't have the legs. Half time: 7-3

Restart gathered well by Chris O'Neill. 45 mins Broughton no. 8, Sandy Urquhart had a great (well, rampaging!) run up the right wing fending off tacklers before being bundled into touch Broughton hit rolling maul from lineout before Sandy peeled off and got into the corner for a lovely try. Neil missed conversion, 12-3 at 60 mins EN advanced down field due to a succession of penalties. Some scum action with more strange refereeing decisions. EN penalty (possibly from a late tackle....again it was hard to decipher the ref) converted. 12-7 at 72 mins. EN upped the pace for a last blast and worked their way down field, but Broughton got a scrum and cleared the ball. Full time 12-6....nice ugly win!
