New directive will 'ruin rugby as a spectacle'
At face value, any rugby match with 2 sendings-off and 2
sin-bins would indicate a ding-dong of a battle with blood shed and loss
of limbs. Saturday was not one of those days however, with hardly
a bad tackle all day but under the new SRU Referee directives, the match
official will have writer's cramp filling out his match report.
- Potential new Referee's sponsor?
Broughton lost the match 22-06 to Waysiders who now see
themselves in 2nd place. There was hardly a hairs-breadth between
the sides until an hour into the game which disappoints a Broughton side
who's 8th place in the League hardly does them justice.
Keen to build on last week's improved performance, Broughton travelled
west in search of a win and it looked good in the early exchanges as the
hosts were the slower of the two sides out of the blocks.
Making his first 1st XV start of the season was Robert 'Bombhead'
Malcolm and the 18 year old was the Broughton player's Man of the Match
after a great performance on the wing including a top challenge in the
air with the opposing winger which left the Waysider player feeling
worse for wear!
 Can the real Bombhead
please stand up?
Waysiders were caught offside in the 4th minute and full back Scott
Hignett slotted over his first points in a Broughton jersey. The
home side had the perfect opportunity to level the score a few minutes
later when Mollier-Alexander was penalised for diving over at the
breakdown however the Waysiders No.13 left his kicking boots in the
changing room.
The opening quarter of the match was littered by penalty offences
however neither side capitalised on each other's errors.
The home side did manage to equalise in the 25th minute from a penalty
awarded after McFarlane was penalised for obstruction when Hart tried to
run out of his own 22. The Waysiders centre regained his composure
after the earlier set-backs and kick his side to a half-time score of
3-3.
The home side, looking less effective than their higher league placing
would suggest, came out for the second-half with added urgency and
scored the opening try in the 44th minute. Stan was penalised for
not releasing in the tackle situation and the home side maintained the
pressure by kicking for the corner. Although the centre knocked-on
in midfield, Broughton couldn't clear their lines from the subsequent
scrum. The home pack collected a loose ball and their bulk was too
much to handle as the rolling maul rumbled over for a try. The
extras were added to put the home side 10-3 ahead.
There is absolutely no truth in the rumour that with the amount of cards
being handed out this year, that the SRU are approaching Clinton Cards
to sponsor the Match Officials next season. However, in the 55th
minute, the first of 4 cards to be shown in the match were handed out.
Broughton's Pyper was sent to the Sin-Bin for a reported unsportingly
challenge on an opponent.
The lead was shortened on the hour after the referee marched back the
home side for not retiring 10 metres at a penalty. Hignett slotted
a difficult kick into the bright Airdrie sunshine to make it 10-6.
Broughton's comeback lasted 120 seconds as Arrandale was caught at the
back of a scrum just inside his own half, and despite his attempts to
release the ball to stand-off Matthews, he fell short of his team mates
grasp and the Waysiders scrum half set up a ruck which quickly released
the ball out to the winger who ran in despite Hart's attentions. 15-6.
66 minutes gone and the sin bin was utilised for the second spell.
This time it's temporary lodger was the Waysiders full back for his
sides persistent infringement. This set up a fantastic opportunity
for Broughton to capitalise on their numerical advantage. A set move was
called 10 metres out, however Pyper was pinged for taking a defending
man out when he tried a dummy move.
With 10 minutes on the clock, the match was hanging in the balance and
the home side were not looking like Promotion candidates by any stretch
of the imagination!
Worse was to follow for them when they were reduced to 13 men with 7
minutes to go. The centre crudely took out Broughton prop Nicolson
in midfield off the ball and this was well spotted by the match
official. The resultant card was a red one and after treatment,
the Broughton player got up only to have the penalty award reversed for
advising the referee of his opinion on his take on the events which saw
him hit the muddy turf.
Both sides finished the match with equal personnel, when the match
official gave a straight red to Broughton scrum half Arrandale for a
tussle at the base of a scrum. His Waysiders counterpart appeared
to infringe at the set play as Arrandale set himself to play the ball
and as Arrandale went to fend him off, the referee adjudged him to have
struck his opponent with a closed fist. Players from the home side
were confused by the decision as much as the Broughton bench and
sportingly came into the changing after the game to offer their kind
comments re the incident.
Back to the action and as the game drew to an end, Waysiders had the
last laugh as their winger ran in for a try following a lost Broughton
maul on their own 22. The conversion was successfully slotted from
bang in front to make the final score Waysiders Drumpellier 22 - 6
Broughton.
