Broughton
self-destructed after a fine start at Wardie on Saturday, with Lenzie
inflicting one of the heaviest league defeats seen at home for some
time.
The visitors were
looking somewhat thin on numbers only 15 minutes prior to kick-off, with
a car load either taking in some of the local tourist attractions or
simply getting lost!
The bad weather,
which had caused a trail of destruction over the country, had fizzled
out however the rain made conditions underfoot very heavy in areas.
Stuart 'Nobby' Thyne
made his first Broughton appearance of the season and he was
instrumental in creating the opening try within the first 5 minutes.
His quick pass out to Kerry Sargeant created space on the outside and
the wee fella popped the ball out to Targowski on the wing who grubber
kicked past the full back some 20 metres out. The speedy winger
outpaced his Lenzie counterpart and won the race to get his fingers on
the ball for a try. Thyne converted to give the homeside a 7-0
lead.
The joys were
short-lived however and from the restart Lenzie collected the ball and a
forwards rumble caused all sorts of problems in the Broughton defence
and with the defensive line all at sea, a try was scored under the
posts. The extras were added to level the scores. 7-7.
Lenzie took advantage
of the Wardie slope and with a quarter of the game gone, they extended
their lead with a try orchestrated by the forwards. MacLennan was
bundled over in the Lenzie 10 metre zone by a rampaging bull of a prop
and as the ball was recycled out to the back-line, the winger was in for
a score despite the attentions of Targowski who tap-tackled the winger
close to the line, but the ball was bundled over the line in the corner.
The angle was too much for the No.10 to convert.
Thyne reduced the
deficit 5 minutes later after the referee penalised Lenzie for diving
over at the ruck and he slotted the kick over to make it 10-12.
Lenzie responded
quickly and effectively. From the base of a scrum on the edge of
the Broughton 22, the No.8 popped the ball into the arms of the
stand-off who came in off his right foot to outfox the defence to ghost
in for a uncontested try under the post which he converted himself.
10-19.
This had clearly
rocked the Broughton side which started to spring more leaks than a
burst pipe in the middle of a cold winter spell. The long restart
was collected by the second rower who eventually fed the No.10 who's
trademark 'hand-off' allowed him leverage to create space to run in for
another try. 10-24.
For Broughton,
getting to half-time without conceding another score was vital. Lenzie,
with a bonus point in the bag already, were keen to put this game out of
reach. With 2 minutes til half-time, the visitors had a line out
on the Broughton 10 in a good attacking position. The stand-off
received the ball and prodded through a kick which Targowski failed to
get down to on his own line and from the ensuing scramble, the referee
awarded a try which was converted. Half-Time 10-31.
Broughton came out of
the traps for the second half conscious that they needed to score early
on to set up any chance of a fightback. George Koo was crudely
taken out by a late challenge as he kicked the ball downfield and
initially the referee went to his pocket for a card for the offence.
After a lengthy discussion with the Lenzie man, he did not brandish it
and the player can perhaps count himself lucky. From the line out,
a Broughton pack drive from 5 metres was never likely to be stopped and
Donald Pyper came up with the ball. 15-31.
The game was out of
the reach for sure in the 52nd minute. Lenzie's No.8 was driving
up the middle of the park when his wayward pass was intercepted by
Broughton's Wells. Unfortunately for the Broughton prop, his pass
from deck only found his Lenzie opposite number and the ball was quickly
thrown out to the winger who ran in under the post to make the
conversion an easy one. 15-38.
Broughton were by
this point out to salvage some pride and a well worked try was their
reward on the hour mark. A line out on the Lenzie 22 was collected
by Dan Arrandale who switched play to Thyne on the right wing. The
stand-off threw a long pass out to Aussie Sargeant and the wee man took
the winger on the outside and beat him for pace (yes, you have read it
correctly!) to dive in for a score in the corner. Thyne's
conversion was just short. 22-38.
The game threatened
to blow up on 65 minutes when Targowski chased after his own kick only
to be elbowed by the Lenzie No.10 in the face. A stramash ensued
and after the referee calmed the proceedings, he brandish the yellow
card to both players, much to the confusion and dismay of the home
crowd.
3 unconverted scores
by the visitors in the final 10 minutes added insult to injury to a
Broughton side who lost Centre Gareth Payne with a damaged shoulder
which may keep him out for a few weeks.
The after match
awards were a laugh anyway, with (THE ONLY) Tackle of the Match award
going to Duncan for his one on one with the winger at the end of the
game, the Man of the Match award nearly went to Bubba for his physio
work, but instead it went to Stan.
The final award was
for Cox of the Day. Only one winner here and it was Donald Pyper
who was made to wear the recently acquired clown's outfit until he left
the clubhouse.
