The Genesis
Strategic Review of Scottish Rugby has a new proposal for winter rugby
in Scotland. They propose that one way forward is to play League
rugby from the start of August until the end of December and have a shut
down to allow for the inclement weather and encourage rugby to be played
in 'better weather conditions'. The season would re-start in March
with a Cup competition.
So, what has this
got to do with Saturday's game? Well, after 3 days of rain in the
Capital, several games were cancelled and the pitch at Wardie was
certainly heavy going and the temperature was far from tropical.
Where do you draw the line on 'better weather conditions'?
Subsequently, two
matches went ahead at Wardie for the 1st time this season with the 1st
XV playing basement side Dick Vet Students and the 2nd XV taking on Fife
Southern and their 'Man Mountain' pack.
The 1st XV match
kicked off a few minutes late due to the non-appearance of the match
balls! Once they were recovered from the spirit store in the bar,
it was game on.
From the first
whistle it looked like Broughton were the best bet for racking up a few
scores but a mixture of poor handling and indecision thwarted a handful
of chances to score early tries.
It was a matter of
time before the league leaders noted their intentions to shake off last
week's cup exit and Top of the Cops Cox went over for his first try of
the season. Further tries either side of half-time by Aussie duo
Paul Hamer & Gareth Payne put the game out of the reach of a dogged Dick
Vet side who were encouraged by the recent influx of new recruits.
The bonus try, which
keeps Broughton 5 points ahead of nearest challengers Penicuik, who
clash at the Old Pavillion next Saturday, was the best score of the day.
Scrum-half Dan
Arrandale collected the ball deep in the Vets 22 on the left wing and a
clever chip and chase resulted in the Students back line being over
exposed and the wee weegie dived on the loose ball to record his first
try of the season.
The referee, who had
a good game otherwise, brandished a red card to Payne midway thru the
second half. The official failed to spot a cowardice piece of
footwork by one of the Students on a Broughton head and Payne took the
law into his own hands and he headed for the sheds for an early shower.
Final Score:
Broughton 26 - 0 Royal Dick Vet.
The 2nd XV were less
fortunate however and they were on the wrong side of a 0-29 scoreline,
however it is encouraging signs to have two teams out at Broughton.
