News::::Broughton go top despite defeat at Sunny Dunny!

Hamish Martineau - Man of the MatchBroughton went top of the table despite a narrow 4 point defeat at Halhill on Saturday.

In what transpired to be a weird afternoon in the Division 5 (East), all Clubs who won on the opening day all suffered reversals, but by virtue of earning 2 bonus points, one for scoring 4 tries and another for losing within the 7 point margin, Broughton go top of the league.

On a warm but windy day down on the coast, the wheels came off the Broughton bandwagon within minutes of the kick-off.  Dunbar kicked-off the game and the ball was not secured by the Broughton defence and it was quickly stolen and distributed through a sharp set of hands and it was an easy enough task for the home side to score under the posts.

Broughton responded well and turned round at half-time with their noses in front.  Paul Hamer carried on from where he left off last week against Portobello and opened the Broughton account with a strong run through the heart of the Dunbar defence and converted his own score.  Duncan Nicolson went over for a score after a pick up at the base of a scrum close to the try-line and Broughton capped off an impressive first half comeback by snatching the lead when Johnny Wells put pressure on the Dunbar No.6 who tried to clear his lines and charged down the kick and the bounce of the ball favoured the big fella and he flopped over for a score.

The 2nd half didn't quite happen for Broughton however and too many infringements lead to too many penalties and 3 in total were perfectly executed by the home kicker to put Dunbar 26-15 ahead with 10 minutes to go.

The lead was reduced 5 minutes later as Broughton refused to give up.  A cleverly worked move through the backs gave Hamish Martineau (pictured) the chance to go in for Broughton's 4 try of the afternoon tight in the right hand corner despite the close attentions of the Dunbar winger.

It was too little to late however as the ref brought the game to an end with Dunbar snatching the victory 26-22 despite their best efforts to throw it away.

Next week, it's Cup time!  Broughton host Division 5 (Caledonia) B leaders Montrose & District at Wardie.  Montrose, who were promoted as Champions of the Midlands District league, have opened their league account with two impressive victories so we will have to be on our guard.
