Broughton got off to the best possible start on a warm Wardie
day, on and off the pitch as they racked up a bonus point by virtue of scoring 4
tries in a 33-10 victory over Portobello.
Aussie Stand-off Paul Hamer (pictured) stole the show with a 23 point haul
which earned him the sponsor's Man of the Match award. His tally included two
tries which could easily have been three had his soccer skills not been up to
scratch early in the first half. He broke free down the right wing and was
winning the race away from the Porty defender's despairing run and when it
seemed easier to wait on the ball bouncing and pick it up, he give it an extra
hoof and it went over the dead ball area.
It didn't take long for him to amend this earlier transgression
and slotted the first of his 3 successful penalties of the day between the
sticks. Minutes later, going down the famous Broughton slope, Kerry
Sargeant was tackled shy of the opposition try line and the ball broke free.
Hamer was on hand to touch down as the Porty players stood still expecting the
referee's whistle to blow for an infringement.
Porty, who were re-admitted to the National Leagues this season
after pulling out of them last year, made their task of getting back into the
game a little more difficult by their indiscipline. Their hooker was
binned for a late tackle on David Gale as the winger put through a kick down the
line.
A further piece of individual brilliance by the Aussie saw him go
in for another score as he broke through the Porty defence with a mazy run and
drew in the defence whilst having Melvin Hart on his shoulder to go in under the
posts.
The visitors lost the services of their Captain Ted Henderson
with 20 minutes left on the clock after the referee deemed that he had tackled a
Broughton player without the ball and he was despatched for a 10 minute cool
down on the sideline.
The home side could now smell victory and from the resultant
penalty, a line out was successfully won and driven over from close range.
At the bottom of the pile was Prop Mark Brown to score against his former Club.

Brown (or Daffydd from BBC's hot comedy 'Little Britain'
as we see on our left!) went from Saint to Sinner within a few minutes when he was
penalised metres away from his own line and the visitors grabbed a consolation
score with a quick tap penalty taken whilst the Broughton side tried to
re-group.
In the closing stages, Broughton sealed the bonus point when Andy
Turtle got on the end of a Dan Arrandale chip and dived over the whitewash.
Overall, a hard days work and an opening day victory, something
not seen at Wardie for a few seasons.
Next week we travel to Sunny Dunny to take on a Dunbar side who
lost narrowly to newcomers Hawick Linden 25-19 at the weekend.
